Biography

Sir Simon (Symon) Musgrave was the third son of Edward Musgrave of Hartley (Harcla), Westmorland, and Edenhall, Cumberland. [1] He was granted the office of constable of Bewcastle in 1555, an office he continued to hold for life.[2][3] After the death of his grandnephew Thomas Musgrave without issue about 1565 or 1567, however, Simon, as next male heir, inherited the family estates at Hartley and Edenhall. He was knighted by Thomas Radcliffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex, at Carlisle, August 28th, 1570. [4] and served as sheriff of Cumberland in 1569-70 and of Westmorland in 1575. Simon was elected a member of Parliament for Cumberland in 1571 and 1572.[5]

He married Julianna Ellerker. [6] He was the father of four sons, Christopher Musgrave, Thomas Musgrave, Richard Musgrave of Norton Conyers, Yorkshire, and John Musgrave and one daughter Anne, wife of Nicholas Curwen[7][8][9]. Simon Musgrave wrote his Will 5 January 1596 [1597 n.s.] [10]and died 30 January 1597. He asked in his Will to be buried at the church at Kirkby Stephen, Westmorland.

Research Note

Simon Musgrave fought at the battle of Solway Moss in 1542, so presumably he was at least 21 years old, that is, born before 1521.[11]
