Mary SCOTT[1]
Born 1520, Brabourne, Kent, , England[2]
Four of the Harleian Manuscripts reference Mary, the wife of Nicholas Ballard. Harleian Manuscripts 1548 folio 180 & 1076 folio 167 give her as a daughter of Sir John Scott of Kent whilst manuscripts 1189 folio 14b & 1431 folio 7 state Mary daughter of Sir John Smith. This discrepancy can be explained by the fact that the Scotts lived in Smeeth near Brabourne hence the confusion.
Mary was cited as Nicholas' wife in a land transaction dated 1539 so they must have married before that date. She was, however, still single when bequeathed £35 by her grandmother in her will of 1528.
