Stephen Smith was baptized December 18, 1726, the son of Stephen Smith and Hannah Collins of Chatham, Barnstable, Massachusetts[1][2][3]
Circa 1746, he married Mehitable Eldridge, the daughter of Nathaniel Eldridge and Sarah Conant of Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts[1][3]. Their children included[4][5]:
Jonathan Eldridge Smith, born August 21, 1747[4], who married Elizabeth Harrington[6]
Stephen III, born May 23, 1749[4][3], who married Susanna Godfrey[7][8]
Hannah, born March 8, 1752[4][3], who married John McIntyre[9]
Bethiah, born January 5, 1754[4][3], who married Benjamin Harrington
Lodowick, born August 22, 1756[4][3], who married Elizabeth Cohoon[10]
Dorcas Tabitha, born March 20, 1759[4][3], who married William Cahoon Jr[11][8]
Sarah, born July 1, 1761[5], who married Ebenezer Harrington[12]
Mehitable, born March 12, 1764[5], who married Abel Chadsey[13]
Elizabeth (Betty), born May 12, 1765[5], who married John Roberts[14][8]
Nathaniel, born June 22, 1769[5], who married Ruth Millard[15]
Circa 1760, Stephen and Mehitable emigrated to Liverpool, Nova Scotia, where he is listed among the first proprietors of the town[16]. They are also noted in Simeon Perkins Diary in various passages[8].
Stephen erected one of the first grist mills in Liverpool. He was a ship-owner who [fished inshore] (i.e. in a shallop or smaller boat on coastal waters). He was a deacon in the Congregational Church, and one of the first to convert to the New Light Church] under the influence of Rev. Henry Alline[8]
Stephen Smith died September 9, 1807, and is buried in the Old Congregational Cemetery[17]
