Biography

Ruth Van Meter (also Van Metre and sometimes one word/either spelling) was born in 1758.[1]

Samuel Gill and Isaac Vanmetre[2] obtained a marriage bond in Berkeley County, Virginia, June 15, 1779, for Samuel Gill and Ruth Vanmetre.

DAR records show that Ruth's father was Henry Van Meter, although he didn't sign the marriage bond or mention her in his will. One source provided the following explanation:[3]

The marriage bond was signed by her brother, Isaac Van Metre, and Samuel Gill. Her father, Henry, was the proper person to have signed the bond, but Ruth, it is believed, took offense at her father's third marriage and had gone to live in Isaac's family. After their marriage Capt. Gill and his wife removed to Botetourt Co., Va., where Isaac's family lived. The Gills afterward removed to Garrard Co., Ky., some time prior to 1790, where they were visited by Jacob, her brother, in 1833, while the latter was a member of the Kentucky Legislature (Obenchain Letters).

That source also showed the following information for Samuel and Ruth (Van Metre) Gill's children:[4]
