The Federalist Papers were authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay during the years 1787 and 1788 in several New York State newspapers to persuade New York voters to ratify the proposed constitution. Collectively, they are considered one of the most important works on political theory ever written. This first edition of The Federalist Papers belongs to the Library of Congress. It was originally owned by Alexander Hamilton's wife, Elizabeth, who gave it to her sister, Angelica Church, from whom her friend, Thomas Jefferson, acquired it.
