Biography

Ireland Native
Thomas Abberton was born in Ireland.

Birth (ca. 1830)

Thomas ABBERTON was born in Ballinakill, Co Galway, Ireland ca. 1830. His parents were Thomas Abberton and his wife Bridget Halloran.
The Potato Famine struck Ireland from 1845 to 1852 and roughly 1 million people died and more than 1 million fled the country.[1]

Emigration (1852)

Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1852, arriving in Sydney, New South Wales as a single male on board the Joseph Somes on 3 Feb 1852. He was recorded as being 22 years of age, a farm labourer and able to both read and write. He was accompanied on the journey by his sister Anne, aged 16 and Margaret HICKEY who was, for some reason, traveling as his sister under the name Catherine ABBERTON. Perhaps a ticket had been purchased in her name and she decided at the last minute to postpone her journey. The real Catherine, aged 24, arrived 2 years later with her brother James, aged 26, on the “Caroline” on 13 October 1854.[2]
Thomas and Anne's brother Patrick had already emigrated to Australia and was supposed to have gone to the Victorian goldfields. Thomas left behind his mother Bridget in Ballinakill. His father had already died.[3]

Marriage (1854)

Thomas ABBERTON and Mary Ann TORPY were married in Goulburn at the Roman Catholic Church on 22 Jul 1854.[4]
The family went on to settle in Mummel, New South Wales, where Thomas and Mary had 15 children.

Death (1901)

Thomas passed away in Goulburn, aged 71 in 1901.

Research Notes

Thomas was not married twice:

A previous researcher had created a profile for a Mary Ann O'Callaghan and suggested that she was a second wife of Thomas Abberton. This was erroneous. Investigation has shown that these two profiles refer to the same person: Mary Ann TORPY. Thomas was only married once and the erroneous O'Callaghan profile was merged into this profile on 6 Mar 2022.

Actually - just checking the passenger list, Thomas (22), Catherine (20) and Anne (16) all came out together, but they are clearly identified as siblings, not a family.

Hi Wheels Flood and Yvonne,

I came across the O'Callaghan page and flagged it as erroneous at the time, but never got around to definitively eliminating it - have just looked at the details and can be certain that page was created in error. Thomas was only married once - to Mary Ann Torpy. If you look at his immigration record, Thomas appears in the passenger list of Joseph Somes (1852) on the page of "single males without family".

Best regards, Matt

Rossmore is a small place In the South East end of the parish of Ballynakill about 2¼ miles and S.E. of Woodford. Co Galway.

I see that his mother Bridget lived in Ballinakill. http://places.galwaylibrary.ie/place/46136

I just added the category and wrote Thomas' name at the top so it will help people locate him.

Hi. Have I read this properly?
Was Thomas married 3 times?
1/ Catherine ( the wife who accompanied him to Australia)
2/Mary (O'Callaghan) Abberton
3/ Mary Ann (Torpy) Abberton

Yes you have read it properly, I read it the same way, Catherine in not mentioned as his wife. The reason I looked at this more carefully is that I am researching my Halloran side of my Family, hoping there was a connection.

I copied your info off Thomas' mothers' profile. It has a few facts relevant to Thomas which could be helpful if placed into Thomas' biography.

I've read other sources that talk about ABBERTON from the area around Woodford and Ballinakil in Co Galway. If relevant categories are added to profiles, other Wikitreers etc can more easily see the connections of names and places.

"Thomas is the second son of Bridget to emigrate to New South Wales, Australia. He arrives in 1852 with his wife Catherine and their daughter Anne. At that time, he notes that his father Thomas is dead and his mother Bridget is living at Ballinakill, Co. Galway. His brother Patrick is already in Australia and said to be working at the gold mines near Goulburn.<ref>Passenger List of the Joseph Somes, arr.
