When Charles was seven years old, his elder sister Laetitia Abbot married Colonel Henry Anderson of the Dunbell Andersons of Co.Kilkenny, Ireland. Charles would eventually marry Henry Anderson's sister Mary Anne Anderson, although it was some ways off from this point. His sister married Henry on 17 Dec 1818 in the Canterbury Cathedral.[2]
Two Marriages between the Abbots and the Andersons |
Seventeen years later, Charles Henry Abbot married Mary Anne Anderson in a mid-summer ceremony on 26 June 1835 at Burnchurch, Kilkenny in the Diocese of Ossory, Ireland.[3]

An announcement in the Groom's local district provided details of the Wedding venue. It read, the 25th ult., at Burnchurch, Charles Henry, son of William . Esq., of the Limes, Canterbury, to Marianne, third daughter Anderson, Esq., Prospect, county Kilkenny.[4]
A reference card from the Irish Genealogical Research Society (see image above) makes the point of Charles Henry Abbot's pre-existing connection to his wife, ie: she was his sister-in-law. Mary Anne was also described as the third daughter of John Anderson of Prospect, Kilkenny.[5] Although strictly speaking, she was not his sister-in-law, she was his sister's, sister-in-law. Be that as it my, the fact still remains that their marriage meant a dual connection between the families. Incidentally, in this very same family and generation, there existed a dual connection with the Ingpens. Charles' brother William Abbot 6th married Emma Ingpen, and Charles' Sister Frances Hannah Abbot married Emma's brother, Edward Ingpen. A further detail of interest is the twelve year age gap between the Groom and his bride, specifically - Mary Anne was twelve years the senior of her husband. A point that will be raised again soon.
The marriage of Charles and Mary Anne has also been confirmed by an old handwritten Genealogy table from the Anderson family, supplied by Kairen Anderson (see Images tab) in terms of date and identity. A smaller capture has been made by Pare Hayward-Howie to place emphasis on that part relevant to the couple. The specific entry states that Mary Anne married Charles H. Abbot of Ardaloe. This was in fact a reference to their residence Ardaloe Cottage, Kilkenny, confirmed by an announcement in the The Kentish Gazette, 04 September 1838, of the arrival of their daughter on 13 August 1838 at "Ardalou (sic) Cottage, Kilkenny".[6]This was a reference to the birth of Charles' daughter Letitia Abbot. In fact, Charles and Mary Ann had at least two children. An announcement appeared in The Limerick Reporter of the birth of a son on 7 April 1841. An assumption has been made that this was a reference to their son, Radcliffe Abbot.[7] Please note that this may be subject to change if further information arises. Charles Henry Abbot passed away on 9 January 1883 at Tramore, County Waterford, Ireland. According to the informant, his son Radcliffe Abbot, his father was an 80-year-old Widower and Gentleman who died as a result of an enlargement of the liver.[8]
Gravestone of Charles H. Abbot |
This detail has also been perpetuated on the grave stone that was erected for Charles' memory by his son-in-law Martin Keane. It reads, Also to the memory of CHARLES H. ABBOT Who departed this life on the 9th of January 1883 Aged 80 Years.[9] Martin quite likely acquired the information from his brother in law, Radcliffe.
Subtracting the age of death from the year of death, meant a birth year of 1803. This initially presented a problem in terms of data matching. Charles Henry Abbot was born in 1811, and a birth year of 1803 was a discrepancy of eight years! Further effort had to be made to link Charles, born in Kent; to Charles who married, lived and died in Ireland. This was enabled through the record of the Irish Genealogical Society as embedded above.
These are questions that we may never learn the answer to, but what is important, is to point out that Charles Henry Abbot was born in 1811 at Canterbury Kent, and that he died in 1883, aged 72 years - not 80 years as the record reads.
