Marcellus Abel was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 27, 1859, the son of George Abel and Anna Marie Kirchgassner Abel. Marcellus was born at the family home on Central Avenue in the Brighton section of Cincinnati. He was thrust into the role of shop keeper after the death of his father. He married Emma Boch about 1883 in Cincinnati. Although Marcellus was raised in the Catholic faith, Emma was a Lutheren and Marcellus converted to her faith when they were married. He had learned the trade of Tailor from his father and developed his own line of clothing and hats. He operated the store from about 1878 until a changing economy and a redevelopment of the area where the shop and family home was located, forced him to seek a different occupation. In the mid 1880's Marcellus decided to try his hand at operating a saloon. He remained in the same area in the Brighton / Camp Washington area and had his saloon at 480 Colerain Avenue. By 1898 Marcellus had again changed occupations this time becoming the first in a line of 4 generations of Cincinnati policeman. He and his family had relocated to a new residence at 2726 Hyde Park Avenue. Marcellus did not enjoy the best of health in later years. He suffered a stroke in November of 1926 and passed away on the November 25, 1926. He is buried in the Abel family plot at Spring Grove Cemetery section 81 lot 26 grave number 24 next to his wife Emma.
