Joseph Abernathy was born in 1749 in Prince George, Virginia Colony, North America, the son of David Harwell Abernathy and Martha Ann Turner. Joseph was the brother of Lucy Nancy Abernathy, John D Abernathy, Martha Abernathy, Elizabeth "Betsy" Abernethy Perkins, David Abernathy, Moses Abernathy, Turner Abernathy, Nancy (Abernathy) Forney, William D Abernathy, and Miles David Abernathy. [1]
Joseph married Ann Williams. They were the parents of at least the following children:
Jospeh moved to Tennesee sometime before 1811. [2]
Jospeh died in 1827 in Lauderdale, Alabama, United States.

Lincoln Co., NC, then through David's son, Methodist Episcopal Rev. Joseph Thomas Abernathy, b. 1824, TN, d. 1859 Coosa Co., AL. Rev. Jos. T. preached at Hanover AL, Methodist Church, and contracted typhus while riding circuit. His youngest son, Joseph Robert Abernathy, b. 1858, married Emma Eliza Duke, d/o James Nelson Duke and Delilah Dean.
