Frans (Abrahamszen) van Salee is a part of US Black heritage.
Their surname “Van Salee” refers to their origin in the Republic of Salé in modern Morocco.[1]
Frans Abrams van Salee was the child of Abraham Jansen van Salee. Hoff suggested[1] that he was the unnamed child of "Abraham Janszen, Fortuijn" baptized without sponsors at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam on 22 November 1654.[2] Hoff asserted that the fact that Frans Abramse Van Salee later appears in Brooklyn with a patronymic name and surname consistent with being the son of Abraham Jansen van Salee "is compelling evidence" he was that he was child baptized in 1654. Hoff further suggested that Fortuijn (Fortuyn), meaning lucky, could have been a nickname of Abraham Janszen or the name of the child’s mother.[1]
Frans and Lucretia Hendricks entered banns of marriage on 17 October 1680 and were married on 3 November 1680 at the Reformed Dutch Church in New York.[3] Among their children were:
He made his will on May 3, 1737. It was proved on May 5, 1738. He mentions his youngest son France Sellea Jun'r, his wife Isabala, his eldest son Abraham, his daughter Anna Mary Van Sellea, his second son (Casteen? or Jan?) prime Van Sellea, third son Caspar prime Van Sellea, and wife's daughter Marya Salmons (also called Maryte Salomo).[12]
