She was the only blond of all the eight daughters of the Adams family. She took her turn at housekeeping for the family, just as her older sisters did. She was a most dependable and hard working girl. Besides her home work, she was her father's helper on the farm. She attended the Bales School, and later attended the Salt Creek School and then the Hoffine School.
On March 4, 1889 she married Freeman R. Smith at Washington, KA.
THe young couple started their married life together on a farm near Enosdale, KA. After several years of farming in Washington County, they moved to Jewell County where they farmed, raising corn and livestock. Ida was an especially good cook and a fine seamstress. She was a devoted mother and her children received good training and a good education.
In 1915 the family moved to a wheat farm near Ashland, KA where they operated a wheat farm in partnership with their son, Charles.
Freeman R. Smith was born June 13, 1861 at Detriot, Michigan. he was the eldest of six children of John Smith. His parents moved to Kansas and located in the Hoffine school district, where they did farming. The Adams and Smith families visited each other quite often and this brought Ida and Freeman together.
Freeman R. Smith died May 30, 1930 at Ashland. After his death, Ida continued to live with her son, Charles and his wife for the next ten years.
In 1940, Ida married Ralph Etherton, a widower and moved to Englewood, KA.
