Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
Daniel Alcott is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A001000.

Daniel was born in 1738. He passed away in 1805.

Daniel Alcott was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on March 25, 1738. He was the son of John Alcott and Deborah Blakesley, who had moved in 1731 from the village of Waterbury to the remote Spindle Hill area. Around this time, the family name was undergoing transformation. He and his brothers began to spell the name Alcox, but Daniel later adopted Allcox as his name. On June 28, 1759, Daniel married Elizabeth Dutton, daughter of Benjamin & Mary Dutton of Wallingford. Daniel & Elizabeth had ten children. In 1770, the residents of Spindle Hill, along with residents of a remote part of Farmington, were organized into a separate parish, named Farmingbury. Daniel served several offices in the new town.

In 1777 Daniel served in the Revolutionary Army, in Capt. Asa Bray's company, Hooker's regiment. After the war he was known as "Captain", although no evidence exists of any military service at that level. Perhaps it was a militia grade. About 1795 they moved from their old home to the new town of Colebrook in Litchfield County. Daniel and his wife were original members of the Colebrook Congregational Church, on December 31, 1795. Daniel died in Colebrook on November 24, 1805.

Visitors to Colebrook have been told that between the early 1800s and about 1920, the original River Burying Ground was flooded by the erection of dams and “some” of the graves in the original cemetery were moved to the Old Riverton Cemetery in Riverton. Unfortunately, no marker exists for Daniel. In his will, Daniel mentioned his wife and daughters Elizabeth and Urany Allcox. Wife Elizabeth and son-in-law Enos Tuttle were named as executors. The date and place of Elizabeth’s death is not known at this time, but she was alive in 1805 and probably died in Colebrook.

I have adopted this profile as Daniel Alcox/Alcott is my 6th great-grandfather. He was a Lieutenant during the

American Revolutionary War - info in the DAR database.

I joined the DAR through my descent from Daniel Alcox.

The bio is great. Thank you to HOWE(1)'s ged entry.
