The deceased gentleman, who was 73 years of age, had been a resident of this
district for about 50 years, having settled here, about three months after he came out from Ireland. He was a native of the county of Armagh, and on his arrival here engaged in farming pursuits, from which he retired shortly after the flood of 1893, by which his property was flooded out.
The late Mr Allen leaves a family, of five daughters and one son to mourn his loss. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Church of England cemetery at Whittingham.
THE INQUEST. An inquest was held on Saturday evening, before the Coroner (Mr D. M'Dougall), at which evidence as follows was given. Mrs Simmons, daughter of the deceased, deposed that he had been suffering for many years from heart disease, and in January last he was very bad, and witness nursed him. He would not, at that time, have any medical attention. Deceased was with witness at 11 a.m. on the day of his death, and he seemed quite well. He was in the habit of visiting witness's house twice every day. She was out on Saturday afternoon when deceased called. Lizzie Jane Davies deposed that she was a domestic servant in the employ of the previous witness. On Saturday afternoon the deceased called, and was sitting in the arm chair talking to her. He seemed very bright and in his usual state of health. He left shortly after 3 p.m., and witness, who was dressed to go out, walked in the same direction. She found the deceased lying dead at Bartrop's motor garage with his head resting on the window sill. She lifted his head and saw that he was quite dead. Constable Lovett deposed that he was on the railway platform on Saturday afternoon, when information was brought to him that Mr Allen had been found lying dead on the footpath at Bartrop's motor garage. He went to the place and found deceased lying-in a cramped position, and quite dead. His head and neck were very black, caused by a rush of blood to the head. ~ Witness removed the body to the morgue at the Dangar Cottage Hospital, and stripped the clothing off. There, was a small scar under the left knee. There were no other marks of violence on the body. Dr. Bowman stated that he had known Mr Allen for over 30 years, and had been attending him professionally during that time. He suffered from, heart disease, and his death was caused by heart failure. Under the circumstances, he did not think a post mortem was necessary. The deceased was a man 73 years of age. The Coroner returned a verdict that death was due to heart failure.
