@N120@ NOTE
The surname Carroll for his wife is strictly a guess, based on the fact that some researchers of early Alvis families state that one man had a wife named ? Carroll. There is no evidence known to the Alvis Exchange.
Louisa Co. Court Orders, 1770-1772; p. 477 10 July 1771 John Alves, Plaintiff against Cosby Duke, Defendent...[no information on what the suit involved]...have settled the account in dispute between the parties...5 pounds 14 shillings due to the plaintiff John Alves...
Witnesses ordered paid for appearing for John Alves:
Thomas Mallory, for traveling 20 miles twice and 35 miles twice
Gustavus Hendrick, for traveling 38 miles twice
Charles Gregory, for traveling 33 miles
James Harris, for traveling 40 miles once and 25 miles twice.
ALVISES IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Thought to have served in 1776 in the same unit as Stanley Alvis.

Alvis, John, Sgt., 14 CL.
Comments: We don?t have the notes which must have accompanied the Gwathmey book to interpret the abbreviations. There were two or three John Alvises in Hanover Co; some of these references probably refer to one man, and possibly only one was in the War, or possibly this man, a son and one or more nephews.
Also, ?Revolutionary War Pension File S6885 for George Gentry of Albemarle Co VA: Testified that he was born in 1765 or 1766 in Hanover Co near Ground Squirrel Bridge; that he served with the VA militia during the Revolutionary War from 1781 until after Cornwallis? Surrender... On questioning by the clerk of court, he responded: ?In the third tour I served as a substitute for Jonh Childress. In the next as a substiture for John Alvis.??
Tax lists:
Hanover Co VA in 1781-2, 7; also in 1793 (plus John Jr and a third John); in 1795-7, 1799-1800, 1802, 1804-5, there was a young man 16-21 with him; in 1798, there were 2 young men, also John Jr with 2 young men; in 1801, 1803, John Sr was not listed
Goochland Co VA in 1788-91; in 1788-90, 1791, with another male over 21 and Matthew named, 1797
1787 tax lists of Virginia (a substitute for the missing 1790 census):
All Alvis in VA. Listing includes males over 21 and heads of households.
Alvis, John, Hanover Co, 0 additional males 16-21, 2 blacks over 16, 1 black below 16, 3 horses, 9 head of cattle
Tentative dates:
born say 1739
1761, in a Louisa Co VA lawsuit
1760s, married
1776, Rev War service; 1781, paid substitute
1781-2, 1787, Hanover Co VA tax list
1784: VA Gen Soc Q XXXI, #1: John Alvis signed a petition, as resident of Hanover Co. Forester Alvis also signed.
1788, consent to marriage of daughter Lucy
1788-91, Goochland Co tax lists, once with Matthew
1789, insolvent in Goochland Co
1793, 1795, 1805, Hanover Co tax lists (moves back and forth from Hanover to Goochland were usually with George)
1805, last year clearly named in tax records as John Alvis Sr
prob had at least 3-4 sons, two daughters
The only evidence for John?s sons is his tax records. In 1789, he had one man 16-21 living with him (i.e., b 1768-73). He had one young man over 16 (b bef 1785) living with him in 1791, but, according to the 1787 entry, none living with him in that year were born 1766-71. In 1798, there was also a young man over 16 (i.e., b bef 1782). But the proximity of young men reaching 21 in the tax records indicate that certainly Matthew (1795, therefore born ca 1774, but not found after 1795), and probably John Jr (1793, therefore b ca 1773 or earlier), Robert (1793, therefore b ca 1773 or earlier), Jesse (1792, with another young man, prob a brother), and others were this John?s sons. Charles Dabney Alvis appears in extant tax records for the first time in 1802 (b ca 1781?) between John and George: Lemuel apparently served in the War of 1812 with Charles Dabney and thus may have been a brother. There probably is no David listed near this John Who can be identified as his son, although the David we have ?tacked on? here must have been somewhere; he may have used another name.
