Biography

Sally (Sarah) Ames was born about 1798 in New York, United States.[1][2] Her birth name is listed on her daughter, Nancy Moore Ames' death record dated 15 February 1898 at Kalamo, Michigan.[3]

She is believed to be wife of John Moore. The More / Moore family left New York and settled land south of Sheffield, within Beverly Township, Wentworth, Gore district, Upper Canada (now part of Hamilton-Wentworth Municipality).[4] Therefore she would have married him in Upper Canada, although record for this has not been identified. It was likely between 1819 and 1825, based on age and as John More first appears as head of household in the 1825 census. His household included two males > 16, 1 male < 16, one female >16, and one female <16. Possibly one of his brothers was the other male over 16? [5]

John died in 1848. The More/Moore family does not appear in the 1851 Canada West census in Beverly Township, but appears about 14 km distant in Dumfries, Brant County.

In the 1851 Canada West census, Sarah Moore, age 52, born in the (United) States, was living in Dumfries, Brant County, Canada West. There are several Moore's listed together in this census. She is listed with Nancy Moore, age 22, assumed to be her daughter, and John Moore, age 12.[1]

She moved back to the United States.

In 1860, Sally Moore (62) was living in Kalamo, Eaton, Michigan, United States, with son Calvin B Moore (32) and his family, and daughter Nancy Moore.[2]

Research Note

Sally may be a sister of Joseph Ames, born 1800 in New York; in Michigan by 1829 when son was born there. 2020-01-17 Amy Golder-Cooper
