Biography

Her age in census records varies, and some family histories show her as born in 1863, but her gravestone gives her birth year as 1860. Her brother James was born in December 1863, and the 1870 census shows her as 9 years old, James as 6. She could certainly have been 9 when a census was taken and turned 10 later that year as we don't know her birth month. James' birthdate of December 1863 is very late in the year; that's when he would have turned 7. Certainly the census was taken earlier in spring or summer when he would have been 6. Family histories are notoriously unreliable but gravestones are almost always created at the time of death by someone who knows actual dates. We can strongly endorse 1860 as her year of birth.

Euphemia Alice Anderson was born to Daniel Meek Anderson and Margaret Jane Sicker in 1860 in Coschocton County, Ohio, United States of America. Later she married John Marion Phelps. Together they moved from Ohio to Kansas. They had 11 children including twin boys Charles Ray and Samuel Roy. Charlie was my grandfather (Leila Phelps Schutz). Euphemia Alice Anderson died when my father was 13 and he remembered her well. She and John had moved in covered wagons when they ventured to the frontier of Kansas and the metal staves of those wagons sat behind the farmhouse when he was growing up. I, of course, did not ever get to meet her. I do remember some of her children though. I knew my grandfather Charlie Phelps the best but I also knew his twin brother Sam, and I met Guy and remember visiting his home when I was young.

Hello Diane. No, Euphemia was not half-Cherokee. I think that you're correct that there is a misunderstanding because of where she was buried. I have tested my DNA and I have no significant Native American heritage. I would encourage Diane Frazier to test her DNA and compare it to mine. I have tested at ancestry.com, 23andme.com, and ftdna.com. I have also uploaded my raw data to GEDmatch.com.

Hi Leila, Diane Frazier, who would be your first cousin once removed told me that she though Euphemia (your great-grandmother) was half Cherokee, but I cannot find anything to confirm that. Do you think there is a misunderstanding because she was buried in Cherokee, Kansas? We are trying to clear this up because my 23 and Me shows no Native Indian. Thanks, Debbie Schotanus

Upon further examination of the census records from 1870 through 1920, Euphelia Alice Anderson could have been born anywhere between 1861 and 1863. Her age varies a bit each time reported.

I would tend to trust the census to some degree. I only have an estimate for her birth. Before I change anything, what family records are you referring to?

She is 9 years old in the 1870 census, and her brother James is 6. Family records give his birth date as December 14, 1863. Is it possible that she was born earlier?
