Biography

Birth, Early Childhood, in Ottumwa, Iowa

Maria Mabel Anderson was born 26 Nov 1886 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.[2] She was the daughter of, and the third of nine children born to, John Anderson and Bena Swenson,[2] who, at the time of her birth, likely lived at 1011 North Wayne Street in Ottumwa.[3] Mabel was baptized 16 Jan 1887 in the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church,[4] then located at 130 North Jefferson Street in Ottumwa.[5] Her sisters Ellen and Ollie were likewise born in Ottumwa, Ellen, 1 Jan 1889,[6] and Ollie, 17 Jan 1891.[7]

Move to Farm in Green Township

Sometime after her sister Ollie was born, and certainly by 16 Apr 1893, when her sister, Esther, was born,[8] Mabel's parents moved just southwest of Ottumwa, to Green Township. Where in Green Township they moved, at least initially, isn't clear, as discussed below. But wherever they moved, Esther and three more of Mabel's siblings were born there, including brothers, Carl, born 18 Mar 1895,[9] and Oliver, born 21 Jul 1897.[10] As of 14 Jun 1900, thirteen year-old Mabel (then going by a nickname of Millie) and her siblings, Frank (aka Leander or Lee), Ellen, Ollie, Esther, Carl and Oliver, lived on the farm their parents owned in Green Township.[11] Her eldest sibling, Clara, had by that year left home and was working as a live-in servant in the Ottumwa home of an unrelated family.[12] Mabel's eighth and final sibling, her sister, Bessie, was then born, 29 Dec 1900.[13]

Relative Location of Farm
As for where in Green Township John and Bena lived after leaving Ottumwa, the only location thus far known is a 180-acre farm about nine miles southwest of their only known address in Ottumwa, both shown in the depiction to the left, based on satellite imagery.
Farm as of 2020
Farm as of 1908
The evidence they owned that 180-acre farm comes from an 1908 map of Green Township.[14] The clip of that 1908 map to the right shows their farm as theirs, and the second clip, taken from recent satellite imagery, shows its location today (click to enlarge). What isn't yet known is when precisely John and Bena moved there. They moved to Green Township by 1893, by 1900 owned a farm there and by 1908 owned the farm shown here, but was that the first and only stop? The answer may come if someone researches the deeds they held in Wapello County.

She was, 18 May 1902, confirmed as a member of the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ottumwa,[15]

Marriage in Ottumwa, Move to Fairfield

Mabel married Neal Robinson, 4 Aug 1909, in Ottumwa.[16] Neal, who at the time of the wedding was a "wood worker,"[16] was the brother of Charlie Robinson, who'd married Mabel's sister, Clara, in 1905.[17] Neal's parents executed the marriage affidavit, and his brother, Charlie, and "C.N. Robinson," likely Clara, were the recorded witnesses.[16] About five months later, Mabel gave birth in Ottumwa to a daughter, 27 Jan 1910, but their baby died the same day, and they buried her in Ottumwa Cemetery.[18] Mabel and Neal remained in Ottumwa after their daughter's death, Neal employed in 1910 as a woodworker for Ott Mill & Construction Company, and the couple residing at 504 East McLean Street.[19]

Mabel gave birth in Ottumwa, 6 Apr 1911, to a son, Earl.[20] As of 1912, Neal, Mabel and Earl lived at 118 South Cherry Street in Ottumwa.[21] By 1915, Mabel, Neal and Earl had relocated to Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa, about 20 miles east of Ottumwa.[22] Charlie and Clara, who had moved to Fairfield in 1911, appeared to have been the impetus for the move by Neal and Mabel, and Charlie thereafter steered Neal toward a plumbing career, the men both working as plumbers for a company called Young & Son, on South Broadway, in 1917.[23] Mabel and Neal remained in Fairfield through at least 5 Jun 1917, living that year at 112 West Burlington in the city.[23]

Permanent Relocation to Wichita, Kansas

As of 1919, Neal and Mabel had relocated to Wichita, Kansas, where they lived with their son, Earl, in a rented dwelling at 538 North St. Francis Avenue, Neal working as a plumber for the W.R. Threlfall Company.[24] They continued to live at that address through at least 1920.[25] By 1922, Neal and Mabel had moved to 114 1/2 North Main in Wichita, where Neal continued working as a plumber.[26] By 1923, the couple remained in Wichita, where Mabel worked as a cook, but they by that year resided at 619 East Elm.[27]

By 1925, Neal and Mabel had relocated within Wichita to 619 East Elm, Neal working as a plumber for a company named J.E. Wilson.[28] By about 1930, their son, Earl, had graduated from high school,[29] and that year Neal, Mabel and Earl lived in a rented dwelling at 619 East Pine Street in Wichita, where Neal continued to work as a plumber.[30]

421 N Vine
By 1935, Mabel and Neal had purchased a home in Wichita, at 421 North Vine Street, where they lived with their son, Earl, and his wife, Helen.[29] By 1939, Earl and his wife, Helen, had moved in with Neal and Mabel at their home on North Vine, Earl working as a salesman and Neal still as a plumber.[31] The four of them continued to live there together through at least 6 Apr 1940, but by that time Earl was working with Neal as an apprentice plumber.[29]

Death

1948 Gathering
As of 1946, Neal and Mabel continued to reside at 421 North Vine, with Neal still working as a plumber,[32] and their son, Earl, and his wife, Helen, lived at 1724 West 2nd Street, also in Wichita, where Earl worked as a plumber for Robinson Plumbing Company.[33] But then Mabel passed away 31 Oct 1948, age 61. The cause of her death isn't known, but it may have been that she had been sick for some time because in the months before her death her surviving siblings gathered in Wichita, presumably at her home, suggesting her condition was known.
She's buried in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.[34]
