John was born in about 1612, to Thomas Antill.
John, son of Thomas Anthill, was baptised on 21 June 1612 in St Martin, West Drayton, Hillingdon, Middlesex, England.[1]
He was a citizen of London and a draper by trade, a member of the Worshipful Company of Drapers. He became a Freeman of the Company by Redemption on 11 Jan 1653/54.[2][3].
Membership of The Drapers’ Company, as with other City Livery Companies, comprises Freemen, Liverymen and Assistants. The Court of Assistants is the governing body.
All men and women admitted to Membership are granted the Freedom of the Company and known as Freemen. Freedom of the Company may be achieved by Patrimony, Patrimonial Redemption, Redemption or by Presentation, and is subject to the payment of appropriate Fines and/or Fees.
The Freedom of the Company entitles a Freeman (male or female) to apply for the Freedom of the City of London, which is the next step to election as a Liveryman.
On 21 Apr 1654 he apprenticed his son John for 8 years.[4] John was accordingly made a Freeman on 31 Jul 1661.[5]
In 1655 John took on another apprentice, one James Knowles, son of James Knowles (deceased), a mercer from Kingston on Thames, Surrey.[6] James became a Freeman in 1662.[7]
On 11 May 1670 John took on a new apprentice, one John Antill, son of James Antill of Chessington, for seven years.[8]John was most likely his nephew.
On 14 Jul 1671 John took on another apprentice, one Joseph Ayarde, son of Joseph Ayarde, bargeman of Twickenham, for seven years.[9] Joseph became a Freeman on 14 May 1679.[10] This appears to be the final apprenticeship that John takes on.
John married Frances, surname unknown, in about 1638-39.[11]
Frances is mentioned in the will of Richard Willsonne or Willson of Kingston upon Thames, proved in September 1639[12]:
Item I give and bequeath to Frances Antill now the wife of John Antill heretofore my
Servant the some of Twenty pounds [13]
John and Frances had the following known children: [11]
Frances died in 1657 and was buried on 23 September 1657 in Richmond, St Mary Magdalene Church, Surrey, England.[14]
John married again, to a widow, Edith Scutt (nee Farley) on 20 May 1658 in St George the Martyr, Southwark, Surrey, England.[15]
The couple had two known children:
Edith died in 1689 and was buried on 25 November 1689 in Richmond, St Mary Magdalene Church, Surrey, England.[16]
John outlived his son, John, who died in 1681. He probably died in 1695 and was buried on 2 July 1695 in Richmond, St Mary Magdalene Church, Surrey, England.[17]

Boyd's lists John's wife Frances as being buried on 23 September 1657. THere is a marriage for a John Antill to an Edith Scott on 20 May 1658 so it seems likely that he married again after the death of Frances[18] Browning-5288 10:44, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
A John Antill was buried on 22 March 1680 in Richmond, Surrey, England, however there is a will for a John Antill with probate granted in 1681 which is possibly John's son and his father John is still alive. Boyd's inhabitants may therefore have the date of death incorrect [19][20] Browning-5288 11:14, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
the 1681 will is for John the younger so it is his son's will and he mentions his father. trnscription in processBrowning-5288 19:00, 1 October 2022 (UTC)
