Research Notes

Somerby Fraud

This person is part of a false pedigree of William Arnold, the immigrant to New England, created by Horatio G. Somerby in 1870. Individual parts of the pedigree may be correct, but many of the parts are incorrect and false. Somerby's fraud is described in detail at False Arnold Pedigree.

The Somerby pedigree contains the following paragraph, which generally agrees with legitimate sources:

"This Ynir, King of Gwentland, by his wife Nesta, daughter of Jestin ap Gurgan, King of Glamorgan, had a son Meiric.[4]

Visitation of Monmouthshire: According to The New England historical and genealogical register of 1915 (which had gone through and corrected Somerby's work), the generations from Ynyr to Roger were taken from Visitation of Monmouthshire, with one generation missing from Somerby's tree immediately before Roger Arnhald.-----H. F. Waters. The New England historical and genealogical register, vol 69, page 64. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1915. Accessed 1 Mar 2022.
