John served as a sergeant in Captain Abner Cranson's company; Colonel Asa Whitcomb's regiment. He was on returns dated 6 Oct 1775 and 2 November 1775 from Camp at Prospect Hill.[5][6]
From his brother Samuel's Find A Grave memorial:[7]
An interpretive marker just before the crypt tells the story of "The Fighting Armstrongs." His father, Col. John Armstrong, was killed on the battlefield at the Battle of Long Island and his brother John was wounded as well, but Maj. Samuel Armstrong had a providential escape from the enemy's bullets while retreating. He was wounded, but continuing in the army until the Peace of 1783.
John married Elizabeth Williams on 6 May 1779 in Dorchester, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States.[8]
John died (age 46) on 20 November 1794 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States.[9][10] Capt. John Armstrong was mentioned on a memorial in Dorchester North Burying Ground, Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States with a death date of 20 November 1794.[11]
