William M. Armstrong was born on 19 November 1843 in Butler County, Ohio.[1][2] He was the son of James Martin Armstrong and Elizabeth Patterson.[3] When his father died in 1858, William went to live with Benjamin Clark and his family.[4] William enlisted in the service in 1862.[1]
He married Sarah Doty, 14 Jan. 1868, in Butler County[5] Sarah and William had at least 5 children: Harry, Charles, Frederick, John Paul and Ada.[1][6][7] William, Sarah and baby Harry were living with Sarah's mother Nancy Enyart in 1870.[6] Baby Charles Armstrong died in 1871.[7] Sarah died when Ada was a baby.[8]
William married second, Catherine Leibee, 27 Aug 1878, in Butler County.[9] His children were living with his mother-in-law, their grandmother, Nancy Enyart in 1880.[10] He was the mayor of Middletown, Ohio, in 1880.[11][1]
William married third, Matilda Jane Rex on Jan 9, 1888 in Montgomery County[12] His daughter, Ada, lived with Matilda and William in 1900, in Columbus, Ohio.[13]
William died of inflammation of the liver on May 1, 1910 in Columbus, Ohio.[2] His brother, Samuel M. Armstrong was the informant on the death certificate.[2] He is buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Columbus (Franklin County), Ohio.[2]

WILLIAM M. ARMSTRONG was born in this county November 19, 1843, his father being James Martin Armstrong, and his mother Elizabeth Patterson. They came to this county in 1830. Mr. Armstrong enlisted in 1862 as a private, remaining until the end of the war. He was also captain of the Tytus Guards, Company D, Fourth Regiment Ohio National Guards, taking command August 9, 1877. He has been mayor for a year, councilman two years, captain of the fire department six years under the Holly system, and five years under the old Miami volunteers. He was married in Middletown Aug. 26, 1878, to Catherine J. Leibee, daughter of Daniel Leibee and Sarah Enyart, who came herein 1820. She was born in Middletown, Mar. 4, 1840. They have four children: Harry B., Fred M., Paul and Ada.[1]
Research Notes
In the book, Biographical Cyclopaedia, William is listed as married to Catherine J. Leibee, with the children of William attributed to her. He was first married to Sarah Doty. The children are hers. William and Catherine didn't marry until Ada, the youngest, was 2 years old. Additionally, there were 5 children, but one has died.[1]
1860 Census: William's father has died and his mother and children are scattered among different families in Butler County. William was working as farm labor on Benjamin Clark's farm.[4]
1870 Census: William and his new wife Sarah (Doty) are living with the Enyarts. Nancy Enyart is Sarah Doty's mother. Samuel, William's brother is living with them also.[6]
1880 Census: William is now married to Catherine Leibee. His children from his first marriage are living with their grandmother, Nancy Enyart. Living with William and Catherine are her sister, Sarah Leibee and Sarah Doty's step-father's brother, David Enyart.[11]
1900 Census: William is now married to Matilda Rex. They are living in Columbus, Ohio. His youngest daughter Ada B. Armstrong is living with them.[13]
1910 Census: William's age is listed as 47[14] although he is actually about 67.
