Thomas was born the second child of Austin Cunningham and Catherine (Dunlap) Aten in 1856 while the family was living in Illinois. After the family moved to Texas Thomas would marry Anna L. Bachman on Christmas Day in 1878 in Travis County where they were still living according to the 1880 US Census. Together Thomas and Anna would have three children as follows:

Allie (Aten) Ferguson (1883- )
Robert Aten (1885-1974)
Anna would pass away in 1903 and Thomas would marry a woman whose parents were both from Germany. Her first name was Ida. They would have no children.
Thomas would pass away on 8 June 1946 and be buried at Round Rock Cemetery, Round Rock, Williamson, Texas.
