Biography

Alexander was born about 1819. He was the son of Benjamin Atnip and Jemima 'Gemima' Heron/Herring.

Though some give his first name as William, I can find no source for this. Everything seems to have just Alex or Alexander.

He passed away about 1850.

Regarding death date:

"As I see it, Alexander was alive Oct. 15, 1849 (as mentioned as heir on father's land grant) and dead by 1850 census. Benjamin was not listed as heir to land grant, so was already dead at that time., and if everything was done according to law, then he died with no heirs. "

Heirs of Benjamin Atnip (dec'd) received a land grant of ( Grant#10552 Entry 383 15 Oct 1849 DeKalb Co 150A by survey 14 Feb 1850 on Holmes Creek). The heirs are named as Jeremiah (Jemima) Atnip; Joseph Atnip, Alexander Atnip, Stephen Atnip; Jacob Atnip; John Atnip; Elizabeth Atnip; Polly E. Atnip; Jemima Atnip Junior; Enoch Atnip; and Linder Atnip. Begin Robt Megasons old corner & Benjamin Atnips old corner also S40E8P N line of 100A survey belonging said heirs E with line 20P to begin corner of said 100A survey 150P in Henry Frazers line E with Frazers line 82P in Easthams line N with Eastham's line 198P in said line W102P. Entry calls for 300A.

(Note: Benjamin Atnip, Jr. is not named in the land grant, and there is only one reason for him to not be named. He had died by 1850 with no surviving heirs. As Benjamin Atniss he is listed on the 1840 Census of Jackson Co., TN in District 13 among the entries of Prettyman Jones. _________________________________________________________
