Biography

Ann (Jobe) Brown is a member of the Jobe Name Study Project.
Ann (Jobe) Brown is a member of the kendall Name Study Project.

I was born in Fort Worth, Texas where I lived until I was 11. We lived not far from the stockyards. At this time, my father was in the Veteran's Hospital. My mother was struggling. She took us to her mother in Grand Prairie,Texas (8 blocks from Arlington but in Dallas County). After staying the summer with her, we found a duplex to rent around the corner from her. I went to Travis Elementary there from beginning of grade 6 to March of that year. Once Daddy was released from the hospital, my parents bought a house across town; but we could still walk to my grandmother. Then I transferred to Sam Houston Elementary and later did grades 7-9 at the new junior high-Adams Jr. High. I graduated from Grand Prairie High school, Dallas County, Texas in 1970.

In August 1972, I moved to Sudbury, Northern Ontario, Canada.

Presently I'm a 24 hour 7 days a week caregiver to my husband who suffered a stroke in May 2022.

My Genealogy Journey

My grandma Minnie (Mears) Jobe who lived until she was almost 97, got me interested in genealogy when I was just 16. Daddy had a camper and from 1967 to 1972 we travelled all over to visit various cousins, court houses and old cemeteries. Many letters were hand-written and I would wait days to get a reply. At this time, even typewriters were had by very few. I got my first typewriter about 1970. It didn't take long for this to become my life's passion. Even today, I get some of my own letters written as a teen back from the children and now grandchildren of those I used to write to. It is a very strange feeling.

I didn't get my first computer until 1988 and then spent 2-3 years entering daily to get everything entered into family tree maker. By now, my main research had turned into a one-name study of the surname JOBE. I entered all my work into freepages which at the time was owned by Rootsweb. Today, ancestry owns them. I also had all my bedcomes, I believe 15 different ones, on World Tree. Once ancestry took these over, everything changed and it was no longer the resource that it originally was.

Also, by this time DNA was becoming prevalent. My mother passed away in 2002 and one of the first things I did after was to get an autosomal test at FTDNA. I also became manager of the DNA surname project for Jobe and Pafford. I also joined the Bussey group on facebook which had recently moved from yahoo.

About 2010 I opened a wikitre account, but only entered maybe 10 people. It would be another decade before I would notice wikitree again. Soon after I noticed a special on Heritage where if you uploaded your DNA there, for about amonth, you would get lifetime DNA matches, etc. Then someone told me to add my DNA to gedmatch which I did. However, I still felt like something was missing. Throughout the years, I had been with small family groups where 3 to 10 of us would work steady for months, some ever a year or two on a particuliar branch. Then about 1996, my husband and I made a trip through the US where we visited more cousins that I had spent months working with. I was now back in research mode -but I now lived in Caanada and my research was in the United States. For some reason, I was looking up someone in google and I came across this person on wikitree. You can imagine my surprise when I saw that they had incorporated DNA. Yes, at first I was hesitant as it meant reentering all over again over 50 years of research. I knew it would be time-comsuning. For the next 2 years I would enter steady. I'm now at my 5th and 6th great grandparents.

Though after being taken down for 2-3 years, due to ancestry taking over the rootsweb free pages, one day they mysteriously reappeared. Things had changed and the pages were no longer able to edit as easily as before. So those pages stay as they were formed in the 1990's. Though many links to the records don't work, the ones that had records embedded on the page and many of the 'old photos' are still there.

I'm very slowly making new research partners and friends and getting reacquainted with my cousins I hadn't heard from in decades here.

My future goal is to have a one-name study on Job, Jobe, Joab, Jobs and Jobes.

JOBE and its Variants: JOB, JOAB, JOBS, JOBES

Ann (Jobe) Brown is a member of the Jobe Name Study Project.

In Early February 2023, I was instrumental in starting the JOBE surname (and variants) project . I had wanted to do this for sometime, but didn't have the confidence to do so. If there is a project for a surname you are interested in, I do encourage you to join it and if there isn't one, then truly think about starting one yourself. Wikitree is a work of collaboration and teamwork based upon research, resources, memories, photos, and presavation for future generations. Here previous research can be corrected by yourself or others as new sources are located. It is here you can meet other reseachers, work with them and easily get technical advice as you need it. Questions are answered promptly. More important, it is a place of friendship and know your research will still be available for our children, grandchildren, cousins, friends, etc.

Ann (Jobe) Brown is a member of the kendall Name Study Project.

In late January 2023, I joined my first project as a researcher and helper. This was for the Kendall surname. My Kendall lineage goes back to Martha Anna (Kendall) Vinson (1825 NC - 1886 MS). She was the daughter of Edward Elams 'Neddy' Kendall and Nancy Smith. Her grandparents were William Kendall and Bethany Callaway of Montgomery County, North Carolina. Her other grandparents were Robert Smith and Miss Freeman of Montgomery and Stanly Counties, North Carolina.

Ann (Jobe) Brown participated with Cornbread Catchers during the January 2023 Connect-a-Thon, and added 532 connections.

In January 2023I , I participated in my first Connect-a-Thon. I finished 26 and added 532 profiles. My team ended up 10th. The biggest joy was working together again and some of the great people that I met. My contributions are now nearing 10,000 and growing daily.

Hi Ann, my name is Tonda Scott. I'm new to the Wikitree format so I hope I can contact you about an issue I have with downloading my GGrandmother to my tree. It keeps telling me I can't and refer to you? Clemetine C. Jobe is my GGrandmother, so we have a connection somewhere in our trees. What do you suggest to add her to my tree?

Tonda, just added your great grandmother, Clementine C. Jobe, as the wife of Thomas James Whinery which then merged with the info that I had on Clementine. All should be ok now.

Hi Ann,

Wow! You are busy. Totally understandable that you won't be part of the Thon this time. I'm excited about you adding folks in NC, GA, and TN as we are related and it may be that we turn out to be fewer degrees apart as we both keep filling out the tree.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Hi, Cora Ann

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Good morning Cora Ann! What a pleasant moment to read your comments relating to my Grandfather Everett and your years of work on the JOBE branch of our family. I appreciate all your efforts to amplify information about those treasured forebears. Both you and Orville are much more successful and productive in documenting our line than I. I love the process but can recognize better work when I see it! I do have a question I'd like to ask but have a lot of checking to do before its framing. Meanwhile, thanks again for your work and please keep me posted from time to time! Denny

Hello Cora Ann,

Your name popped up in my email family activity feed. I just noticed a relatively close relationship between us. 4th cousin, once removed. And a gedmatch comparison shows a 10.4 segment of DNA between you and my dad. I'll send you a personal message. It's always nice to meet a new cousin!
