Biography

Sir George Ayliffe, Knight, of Rabson, Wiltshire

George Ayliffe was recorded in the Ayliffe pedigree in the Visitation of Wiltshire in 1623 as the eldest son of John Ayliffe of Grittenham, Brinkworth, Wiltshire, and his first wife Elizabeth Harris [Harrison] of London.[1][2]

George 'Alife' was baptised on 08 Jun 1584 at St Olave Old Jewry, City of London, son of Mr John Alife.[3]

Marriages and Children

George Ayliffe married first Anne, daughter of Sir John St John of Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire.[1][4] The marriage took place around 1610.[5]

He married second Martha Blount on 20 May 1634 at St Margaret Westminster, Middlesex.[12]

Career

George 'Ayloff of Essex (Grettenham, Wilts)' was knighted on 28 Oct 1617 at Royston.[13]

He inherited on the death of his father in 1631.[5]

In 1643 in the records of the Manor Court of Brinkworth, Wiltshire, was noted an issue regarding a sluice in the river and lands inherited by Sir George Ayliffe.[14]

He was described as being of Rabson, Wiltshire.[6] The Manor of Rabson in the parish of Winterbourne Bassett was also known as the manor of North Winterborne.

Death

Sir George Ayliffe was buried on 06 Dec 1643 at Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire.[15][16]

Summary of the Will of Sir George Ayliffe 1647

In his will made on 22 May 1640 and proved on 30 Mar 1647 he was recorded as Sir George Ayliffe of Rabson, Wiltshire, knight.[6] His will was "to be buried in the vault in Lydyard Church by the bodie of most deare wife there interred alredy which was one of her last requests to me."

He bequeathed "to my wife my Ladie Ayliffe all that household stuffe of mine at Dedisham in Sussex".

To his four daughters Susanna Ayliffe, Barbara Ayliffe, Frances Ayliffe and Appesley Ayliffe, he bequeathed £1000 each for their portions, to be paid to them at the day of their marriage or at age 21.

To his daughters Elizabeth Duke and Debora Saint John he bequeathed £5 each for a ring.

"To my daughter Katherin Ayliffe the wife of my sonn John Ayliffe £10. To my Grandson George Ayliffe £10. To my Granddaughter Katherin Ayliffe £10".

He noted his servant John Frye.

"To my deare sonn John Ayliffe whoe hath ever carried himselfe most dutifullie and loveing to me for which God forever requite him in the duty of all his my Grandchildren to him my best coach and all such my coach horses as I shall dye possessed of and my owne sadle horse all my plate and all my furniture and householdstuffe of that house I made my dwelling house that faire case of Instruments withall thins belonging it it which was Sir John Ayliffs my greate Grandfather and left by him to my Grandfather and from him to my father and from my father to me and from me to my sonn whome God for ever blesse desireing him to keepe it to leave to posteretie in memorie of Sir John Ayliffe whoe by Gods providence was the first raiser of our famely".

He nominated his son John Ayliffe as his sole Executor.

The Overseers were his 'cousin' and friend the Right honorable William Viscount Grandeson and his son in law Edward Hyde esq.

He also noted "my Ladie Villiers my dearest sister" (his sister in law Barbara St John).
