In the Visitation of Wiltshire in 1623 Thomas Ayliffe was recorded as the 4th son of John Ayliffe of Grittenham, Brinkworth, Wiltshire. His mother was Susanna Hinton.[1][2]
His year of birth is uncertain. His parents were married 16 Feb 1595/1596. His mother was buried 14 Dec 1603. Hence his year of birth has been estimated as c 1600. He died "in the 48th yeare of his age" (see Monumental Inscription below) but the year of his death is unknown.
The forthcoming marriage of Thomas Ayliffe to Elizabeth Gawen, daughter of Walter Gawen, gent of Imber, Wiltshire, was noted in an Indenture of 16 Sep 1626 conveying the Manor, capital messuage and farm of Imber from Walter Gawen and Elizabeth his wife to Thomas Smithe Esq. of Corsham, Wiltshire and John Spencer Esq of Quidhampton, Wiltshire.[3]
"Thomas Aelieffe gent was married to Elizabeth Gawen the daughter of Walter gent" on 13 Dec 1626 at Imber, Wiltshire.[4][5]
The Indenture of 1626 was also noted in the Inquisition Post Mortem of 25 Sep 1638 of Walter Gawen, gent, of Imber.[6] The IPM stated that Elizabeth Gawen the only daughter and heir of Walter Gawen had married Thomas Ayliff on 20 Dec 1626 at Imber, Wiltshire.
Children of Thomas and Elizabeth Ayliffe (as per monument - see below):
His year of death is unknown but was perhaps c 1647. There are no extant burial records for Imber, Wiltshire in the 1640s.
There is a monumental inscription to Thomas Ayliffe in the church of St Giles at Imber, Wiltshire:[7]
"Here lyeth ye body of Thomas Ayliff gent sonne of John Ayliff of Grettenham in ye county of Wilts Esq by Susanna ye daughter of Sr Thomas Hinton of Broade Hinton Kt who married Elizabeth Gawen ye daughter and heire of Walter Gawen of Ember Esq by whom he had issue John Elizabeth Susanna Mary Debera Sarah and Honor. "Here lyeth ye body of John ye sonne of Thomas Ayliff above written who died in ye tenth yeare of his age."
