Biography

This profile is part of the Babcock Name Study.

Jonathan Badcock born at Dorchester, Massachusetts about 1652, son of Robert and Joanna (Phillips) Badcock. [1][2] He was baptized at the First Church at Dorchester on March 7, 1651/2, but was noted to be weeks or months older than children baptized on that day.[3]

He was first married on August 1, 1676, to Mary Curtis at Milton, Massachusetts, where their children were born.[4] [1] Mary was born in Scituate, Massachusetts in Jan 9, 1655/6, daughter of Richard and wife Ann (Hallet) Curtis.[5]

In the will of his father-in-law Richard Curtis of Scituate, written on December 21, 1692, named among his heirs is daughter Mary Badcock. [6]

John and Mary removed to Connecticut, where he was of Lebanon in 1709; and of Windham in 1711. [1] Jonathan was likely the second permanent settler of that section of Windham, that later became the village of Willimantic. [7]

  • 1709: Sept. 15: Jonathan Babcock was conveyed close to 1,000 acres at Willimantic for L180, originally Lot 9, drawn by the family of Captain John Mason. [7]
  • 1711: Dec. 10: Jonathan was admitted as an inhabitant of Windham. [7]
  • He was a member of the first church. [7]

His wife Mary died on March 28, 1719 at Windham, in her 64th year. [8] [1] [7]

Jonathan married Mary (___) Hibbard (or Hebard), his second wife, on October 19, 1719, at Windham.[9] [8] [1] She was possibly the widow of one of the Robert Hibard/Hebards of Windham, though they seem to have married other women named Mary. [7] [10]

Jonathan Badcock died at Coventry, Connecticut on January 5, 1731/2, aged 80 years.[1] [7] [11][12]

Research Notes

Issue - One or two wives.

  • LNAB of second wife Mary ? Unk/Hibard/Hebard; may have been the widow of a Robert Hibard/Hebard of Windham. ]
  • From discussion on second wife's profile - Before anyone points out the obvious: A. G. Hibbard (Genealogy of the Hibbard Family) says that Mary (Walden) Hibbard d. 7 March 1736. This is incorrect, as is the date itself. That Mary was Mary Reed, the wife of Robert, son of Robert and Mary (Walden) Hibbard: 'The above named Robert Hibard dyed June: 26: 1742 / Mary his wife Died March 7th 1763'

Shouldn't the last name at birth be Badcock (instead of Babcock), to match those of his siblings? And his baptism record is not spelled Babcock. https://archive.org/details/recordsoffirstch00firs/page/160/mode/2up?q=badcock

Yes, he was originally Badcock-66 and someone merged him in the wrong direction, ages ago.

Turns out it is only the profile manager that can alter the LNAB...it is a doable managerial task. There are many early Badcocks from the Milton line that are mislabeled in this same way, probably because later on the family would switch to the Babcock Spelling and many genealogies/or on-line services over-simplify the account in contradiction to actual primary sources such as birth records.

For anyone who is not the manager, it is helpful to add "Badcock" as an alternate "other" last name, this makes it much much easier to spot who is probably from the Milton line and alerts researchers to search on both spellings when looking for primary sources or in old town histories. Records are surprisingly good for this line when hunted under the correct spelling.

That being said, the Babcock Name Study considers the American Babcocks and American Badcocks as one family which makes good sense since they almost all drifted to the Babcock spelling in time.

I think you find the baptism records for both Samuell Badcocke and Jonathan Badcocke on pages 160 and 161 of the "Records of the First Church at Dorchester, in New England, 1636-1734" Multiple records for Robert Badcock/Badcoke/Badcocke are searchable in this book including baptisms of his later children and some sort of trouble Robert got into with the church that may have something to do with drunkenness and offending someone. A man named Mather (Increase possibly?) seems to be running this Church and the early records while hard to understand show a severe/unforgiving climate especially about babies that are born premature in relation to their parents marriage date. The baptism dates may require someone's insight into early dating to fully grasp. Jonathan seems to be noted as having been baptized the seven day of the first month of 1651, though that might mean March given early dating. And he is noted as baptized a little later than typically was done, as he was a bigger baby than the others baptized that day...most of Robert's other children have a similar notation.

Also, "The History of Milton" mentions a few interesting things about this Jonathan Badcock on pages 20-21 such as: "March 14, 1683. Jonathan Badcock refused to sign the petition to the king."

The source refers to him incorrectly as the oldest son of Robert, though this could have been true in some respect after the actual oldest son had predeceased Jonathan. The given birth year of 1655 is provably wrong given the many Badcock/Badcocke baptisms from the First Church Records, but it explains why this wrong number shows up now and again in pedigree charts like a bad penny.

It seems to be this same Jonathan Badcock who was engaged in legal issues over the leasing of land in Canton, Massachusetts near Milton in 1705 and 1706.
