Biography

Adelaide was born in Jefferson County, NY, probably in LaFargeville, to Harvey Bailey and Laura Ann Wright. Her family lived in LaFargeville and she grew up there. The family moved to Adams, NY soon after the end of the Civil War. She lived with her parents most of her life. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. After her parents passed, she lived alone or with boarders in the family house on North Main Street in Adams, and in 1912 attempted matrimony, though too old to have children, by marrying Charles F. Lewis in Adams Centre. By 1920, she had divorced, was living as a boarder back in Adams and going by her maiden name. She passed away there in 1921 and is buried with her family in the Adams Rural Cemetery.

Jefferson County Journal (Watertown, NY), 8 Jun 1921, p.1.

"Adelaide L. Bailey died at the home of Mrs. L. M. Cowles, Spring street, Friday afternoon, June 3, aged 72 years. She had been in poor health for some time. She was the only daughter of the late Hon Harvey and Laura Bailey. She was born in the village of LaFargeville and moved to Adams with her parents soon after the close of the Civil war, and this village has been her home ever since with the exception of a few years passed in Adams Center. She was a member of the Presbyterian church for many years and her pastor, Rev. C L. Luther, conducted the funeral services, which were held Sunday afternoon from her late home. Burial in Rural cemetery. She leaves one brother, Edward, of Buffalo, who was present at the burial."
