Narcissa A. Baldridge was born 12 April 1825 in what is now Licking, Texas County, Missouri, to parents John Baldridge and Mary (Henderson) Baldridge. Narcissa A. Poteet died in Fisher county where she moved from Comanche county Tx. ,while living with her daughter Mary Walls and Louis C. Poteet,, moved to Fisher co. Tx. where she died in 1912 at age 86. She is buried at Cottonwood Flat Cemetery, Scurry County, Texas, USA.
Narcissa told family she was a cousin to Daniel Boone on her mother's side of the family.
Her father John Baldridge and his brother Robert were Rangers in Captain James Callaway's company during the Indian War. After the war ended, her father moved to Gasconade County, Missouri, where he built a large saw mill in the surrounding pine forest. daughter Narcissa was born there in 1825.
She married Samuel Gillespie Poteet in 1841 in Texas County, Missouri, when she was just 16 years old. The couple had eight children:
Mary Poteet, married John Walls
Jane Isabell Poteet, married John McHaney
James H. Poteet, married 1) Josephine; and 2) Lavina, surnames unknown
Martha Poteet, married 1) William Vaughn; and 2) George Cogburn
John Edward Poteet, married Louisa Burkhart
William T. J. Poteet, married Dorcas Butcher
Louis Cass Poteet, married 1) Leila Foote; and 2) Eunice Spivey
Linda Poteet, married J. D. Gray
Narcissa's husband Samuel Poteet died in 1862. The family continued to live in their home in Licking County, Missouri until the Civil War started. As the battles grew worse, Narcissa moved her family to Garnett, Kansas, where Samuel's brother Allen Poteet and sister Mary Springer lived with their own families. After their arrival, Samuel Henry, a child raised by Samuel and Narcissa, and Allen Poteet entered the Union Army.
Before he died, Samuel Poteet helped out a friend by co-signing for a loan. The loan came due after Samuel Poteet's death. At that time, his friend either could not or would not repay the loan as promised, and the bank came after Narcissa to repay the debt. By that time, she was in no position to repay that kind of debt. The bank responded by foreclosing on the family's farm equipment and livestock, intending to auction everything from possessions to livestock. Narcissa's father-in-law James H. Poteet helped her settle her husband's estate as well as helped her repurchase some of the livestock and tools that once belonged to her family. After the two year stay in Kansas, the family returned to the farm.
According to the 1870 Pulaski County Missouri census, Narcissa and her children lived in Big Piney Township. The family was divided into three households:
Narcissia Poteet and children James, John, William, Louis, Martha and Linda
John McHaney and Jane Isabella Poteet McHaney
John and Mary Elmira Poteet Walls with son Samuel (father and son died of Diphtheria between 1870 and 1876)
Her son John Poteet married cousin Louisa Burkhart on 26 September 1875 in Grayson County, Texas. She was the niece of his father's first wife, no blood relation.
In the fall of 1876, Narcissa and her children James, William T. J., Linda and Martha moved to Grayson County, Texas. While on their journey south, they went through Indian Nation (Oklahoma) when James' wife Josephine went into labor. On 27 November 1876 she had a boy whom the couple named Samuel Gillespie Poteet, after his paternal grandfather. Josephine did not recover well from the delivery, and the family remained longer in Oklahoma than planned. When she continued to deteriorate, James took his wife back to Missouri to be with her parents and other family members. She died nine days later. While the rest of his family decided to continue their move to Texas, son James remained in Missouri where he remarried and had one son, Jesse. Four years later, James died, and after his death, his widow decided she no longer wanted to raise the son born to James and his first wife, Samuel. Samuel was taken down to Texas where he lived with his grandmother and Uncle Louis. Young Samuel joined a cattle drive when he was 15 years old, likely helping drive cattle up the nearby Chisholm Trail to Fort Worth.
The Texas Poteet clan lived in Grayson, Brown, McClennan, Bosque, Comanche, and Fisher counties in Texas.
John Edward Poteet died in Comanche County.
William Poteet died in Bosque County.
Narcissa, Louis, Linda and Mary died in Fisher County.
Note that the added bio in the Find A Grave record is wrong, calling her the daughter of Louis Cass Poteet who was born in 1859, 25 years after Narcissa's birth. Louis Cass Poteet was Narcissa's son, and he likely named one of his daughters after his mother. This specific record, however, is for his mother, not his daughter.

I have no problem with what you and Julie decide. I gave you the information I have, if there is more information that shows mine to be incorrect, I would say, use it. Thanks for asking

Well, Bill and Julie, a couple of years have gone by, and I still have trouble accepting that Narcissia's mother was Mary Henderson. There is much evidence that John Baldridge was married to Mary Lunsford, daughter of Elizabeth Walton Lunsford and granddaughter of William and Mary Walton - among it the Walton wills. It is possible - although I don't see where - to fit another marriage to Mary Henderson in. Perhaps the Bible entry was mis-transcribed - I wish we could find a copy of it. Since no one can find evidence of Mary Henderson as wife of John Baldridge or mother of Narcissia, I am for changing it to Mary Lunsford. I am going to send you a time-line I did of John Baldridge's life. Incidentally, Mary Lunsford was a cousin to Jemima Boone by marriage, in a round-about way. I wonder if this was what Narcissia was referring to?
Bill, I think that Narcissia's Bible entry would be right. I knew about the Bible, but had only heard her birth date, and the part about Daniel Boone. Do you know if the Bible still exists, and who has it? Wouldn't it be great to see a copy of the written page! There were several Hendersons in early St. Louis and Cape Girardeau areas, active in petitions to the governor, etc. Also acting in various government positions. In 1830 in Gasconade County, some of them were there, on the same pages as several Waltons. We thought Mary Lunsford was John Baldridge's wife, because Joseph Walton was administrator of John's estate. John's wife (Narcissia's mother) must have died before he did, since she wasn't mentioned in the form designating Joseph Walton as administrator.
I guess John Baldridge could have been married to Mary Henderson first, possibly she died after Narcissia was born, then he married Mary Lunsford. There was a son born during the 30's which I could never find what happened to, so he must have died.
So complicated, but I believe we should change Narcissia's mother to Mary Henderson. If you don't mind, I'll wait a little while and try to sort out her family before making the change.
Hi, Julie and Bill! When my siblings and I did our research on the Poteets several years ago, we concluded that Narcissia's mother was Mary (Polly) Lunsford (father Edward Lunsford). Mary (Polly)'s mother was Elizabeth Walton, daughter of William Walton. William's will left a bequest to his deceased daughter Elizabeth Lunsford's daughters, Narcissia, Mary and Malinda. When John Baldridge died in 1837, a J. Walton sold his land - could've been Mary's uncle.
We saw that some had Mary Henderson as Narcissia's mother, but we couldn't find any reference to her anywhere. I wonder if there could be any connection to Daniel Boone, or Daniel Morgan Boone, through the Waltons or Lunsford's? William Walton is on WikiTree. I haven't really looked for the Lunsford connection. What do you all think?
I Don't know the reference I found is from the book "Families of Fisher County Texas". The article by Frances Clegg- based on Samuel G. and Nercissia A. Baldridge Poteet's bible. It stated " Nercissia A. Baldridge was born April 12, 1825, at what is now Licking, Texas county, Missouri. Her father was John Baldridge, he was Irish and ran a sawmill on the Big Piney River. Her mother , Mary (or May) Henderson was English extraction . The Henderson's came to land in Missouri in the early 1800's that had been granted by the Spanish Lieutenant Governor to Daniel Boone and families he could bring. Nercissia said she was an own cousin to Daniel Boone on her mother's side." I looked for the Henderson's in North & South Carolina and found that Daniel Boone worked for them a short time before going to Kentucky - no proof of relationship. There were also stories of when they lived on the Big Piney and owned bottom Land. Your Brother and sister were very good researchers and it is hard to determine which to use. I have no personal knowledge of either and what you and Julie decide is ok. I based my decision on the reference to the Family Bible. I never saw the Bible only the article. The author was probably the daughter of Narcissia C. Poteet Clegg
Baldridge-531 and Baldridge-528 appear to represent the same person because: Hi Bill, here is the merge request for Narcissa Poteet that I mentioned earlier in my note to you. If you'll approve the merge, I'll combine the two profiles. Thanks so much for you help with this.
