Biography

The Baldwin family information was furnished to Charles Candee Baldwin, in about 1875, by Moses Haywood Baldwin, and it appears that Moses did not know the full name of his grandmother, reporting probably in cursive, that was read by Charles Candee, as "Craven or Crary". The cursive Cravey could easily appear as Craven or Crary.
Owen Cravey was a witness to legal documents of William Baldwin in Northampton county, NC and he lived on the south side of the Meherrin River across from William Baldwin. William was born about 1736 in the Isle of Wight, Virginia or Amelia county, Virginia. He came to Northampton county, NC in 1755 from Amelia co., VA. and bought land in Maney's Neck on the north side of the Meherrin River, across from the present town of Murfreesboro, North Carolina. The deeds where witnessed by Owen Cravey. William still owned the land when that area north of the Meherrin was cut into the new county of Hertford.
William had other contacts with the Craveys in Edgecombe County, NC. Abstract of Early Deeds of Edgecombe Co. N.C. 1759-1772: Page 56 Deed Book "D" Wiliam Baldwin witnessed deed Oct. 19.1767 of John Womble of Edgecombe Co. to James Cravey, of same, for tract on South side of the Tar River. James Cravey was a son of the Owen Cravey of Northampton, NC.
All the known daughters of Owen Cravey did not marry William, but there may have been a daughter that married William and is unkown. The records of this era are very scarce.
