Biography

Cross of St George
John Balguy was born in England.

Early Life

John was born on 16 December 1821 at Wiverton Hall, Nottinghamshire[1] to John Balguy (1782-1858) and Barbara Fleming (St. John) Balguy (1791-1856)[2]. Barbara was the daughter of Rev. John Francis Seymour Fleming St. John, prebendary of Worcester[3].

He was baptised on the 20th December at St Andrew's, Langar[4].

John was Educated at:

  • At Eton 5th form in 1838[5].
  • Oxford, Merton College. Matriculated on 6 June 1840 aged 18[6]. BA in 1844
  • Middle Temple admitted 16 Nov 1844 and called to the bar 26 May 1848[7]

Family

John married Harriet Anne Ogle on 3rd April 1858 in Beckenham, Kent[8]. The marriage was announced in the Leamington Spa Courier[9] and the Lincoln Rutland and Stamford Mercury[10].

John and Anne had at least 3 children:

Occupation

John was a Barrister at law and Stipendiary Magistrate in Stoke-on-Trent, c.1870-74 and at Greenwich and Woolwich in Metropolitan Police District, 1874-86[6]. He was also JP for Derbyshire[11].

He inherited Duffield Park from his father in 1858 but let it from 1860. He leased Longton Hall (Staffs) from 1870-72 and later Waltham House, Great Waltham (Essex). In 1880 he had a house in London and also Hawley House, Dartford (Kent) and Wolseley Hall (Staffs)[3].


Death & Legacy

He passed away on 5 December 1886 in Huyton, Lincolnshire whilst visiting his son John Henry Balguy[12]. His will was proved 3 March 1887[3]. His obituary is recorded in the Essex newsman[12]

  • 1881, England and Wales Census. Residence: Great Waltham, Essex, England. Occupation: Metropolitan Police Magistrate. Age 59 living with his wife and two children[14]
  • 1887, obituary[12]. Residence: Waltham House, Great Waltham, Essex, England.
