Biography

This profile is part of the Ball Name Study.

John Ball was born July 12, 1817 in Goshen, Orange County, NY to Amzi Ball and Jane Crane.[1]

A short history of his life can be seen online at https://ia801408.us.archive.org/18/items/historyoffloydco02inte/historyoffloydco02inte.pdf in the History of Floyd County, Iowa Chicago: Interstate Publishing Co., 1882. Ulster Township (p. 1031).

The book states that John moved with his parents at age 14 to New Jersey, near Newark:

He learned the carpenter’s trade with his father, and at the age of sixteen went to Newark to work. In August 1835, in company with his father, moved to Michigan City, Ind., where he remained one year, when he married Nancy Glover, who was born in Putnam County, Ind., Jan 4, 1816.

After their marriage they moved to Lake County, Ind. Here they remained engaged in farming principally till the year 1853, when they emigrated to Iowa and located in Ulster Township, Floyd County, being the first settlers of the township.

The biography continues in what sounds like a contemporary voice, stating that the couple "still reside" there after 40 years and six children.
According to this biography, John Ball was elected County Judge in 1855, and served as a Justice of the Peace. The couple were members of the Free Methodist church, and John served as a minister there.
"During the war, though well up in years, he was determined to enlist and help Uncle Sam do his threshing, but was refused the job on account of his age. In spite of this rebuff he joined the Quartermaster’s Department and remained for a time, when failing health caused him to return." [2]

John Ball can be found at the age of 33 on the 1850 US census for Winfield Township, Lake County, Indiana, along with his wife Nancy, and their four children. Also in the household is Jane Glover, Nancy Glover's younger sister.
