Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Leonard Ballew was a Virginia colonist.

Leonard Ballow was born about 1646 in Charles City, Virginia. [1] [2]

From the document Leonard Ballew of Henrico Co, Va. we speculate that Leonard had at least two sons and perhaps other children.

  1. Leonard Ballew
  2. Thomas Ballew

This same document speculates that Leonard's wife may have been the daughter of Robert Burton since they lived in close proximity, or that Leonard could have been married to a relative of William Cookson since Cookson referred to Leonard Ballew and Leonard's brother, William Ballew as "my well-beloved friends" in his will, a term often reserved for relatives.

I suspect that "Dorothy (Parker) Ballou, Parker-321 has been misattributed as Leonard's (Ballew-30) wife.

The same Parker-321 profile is attributed as being his mother. Her birth date of 27 Jan 1622 would make her about 20 years older than (Ballew-30). Does anyone have information and or documentation suggesting a different wife for Leonard Ballew, (Ballew-30)?

William Ballew named wife Dorothy in his will so I would detach her as Leonard's wife and leave her as his mother. She can't be both! If you could find this book in a library it might help: Leonard and William Ballew of Henrico County, Virginia and Their Descendants appears to be self-published by the author James S. Hamlin in 2004. A note regarding the book says "William Ballowe was born in England. He married Dorothy Parker or Mary Leigh. Their children included William, Leonard, Thomas, and possibly Gilbert, Ann and William. Leonard was born in 1681/2 and he lived in Henrico County Virginia. Other descendants also lived in Virginia. The surname Ballou is also spelled Ballowe, Ballew, Ballow and other ways."

Hi Kathie, and thanks for the comment:

I have removed Dorothy (Parker) Ballou, (Parker-321) as the wife of Leonard (Ballew-30). I have a digital copy of the book by James S. Hamlin and under the Marriage Section it states that "The wife of Leonard(2) Ballew is not known, but she may have been a daughter of Robert Burton." It goes on to say that Leonard(2) Ballew's wife may also have been a relative of William Cookson. I will leave that for further research for someone with more resources than I have. I find this Leonard Ballew profile, (Ballew-30), to be interesting because the two Y-DNA testers shown on his profile page are Y-DNA matches to myself, my brother and my first cousin once removed. However, we have not been able to find a common ancestor to link the three of us to the other two, Y-DNA descendants of Leonard Ballew, (Ballew-30)

As per the attached document, "Pages 22-24. “Leonard and William Ballew of Early Henrico Co, Virginia and Their Descendants” By James S.Hamlin", added Leonard and Thomas as sons of this Leonard Ballew profile.

Still need more documentation on additional children and spouses(s).
