Biography

Judith Bankston [1]

New notes from 2024: The original source of the name Judith has been difficult to ascertain. Albert Eugene Casey gives her name as Judith in his book Southern Taylor Families published in 1958, however without a source. It appears that Casey was doing research with Texana Carter (a descendant of the Carters, some of whom married into the Nimrod Taylor/Judith Bankston family) and in the 1920s, Texana obtained an affidavit from her great-aunt regarding Judith Bankston (and presumably others) to support her DAR application under Isaac Carter. Texana later wrote a letter to the DAR in regards to information about Nimrod Taylor and cited this affidavit. (Note that her calling Nimrod Taylor a Revolutionary War soldier now appears to be inaccurate, see his profile.)

The letter says, "We traced this service record [of Nimrod Taylor] many years ago--in the early 1920's, when we were tracing that of my own Revolutionary ancestor--Isaac Carter, whose son Harville (my great-grandfather) married the granddaughter of above Nimrod Taylor. You see, at the time we submitted an affidavit of my great-aunt, that she knew Judith Taylor White--later wife of Harville's elder brother Burrell--and knew her to be the daughter of Judith Bankston--twin of John--and Nimrod Taylor, also a Revolutionary Solder as were the Bankstons and Carter' ancestor. You have the records. Court records as to marriages etc bore us out. Hope this suffices. Dr. Casey, and Miss Otken of McComb (he is now of Birmingham, Ala.), as well as I, myself, dug into cemeteries, old Bibles, old courthouse records for our profs (sic). He was a scientist and exact as good doctors are. Miss Otken a skilled librarian. And I have spent many many years as a legal secretary and statistician. Consequently we think are (sic) facts as evolved were substantiated as published in the Amite County Records and the Taylor Book." Signed Texana Carter, Registrar, Oushola Chapter D.A.R. Date stamp from DAR is 15 Dec 1967.

I believe the great-aunt to be Delilah Virginia Carter, niece of Burrell Carter who married Judith Taylor White Carter. A search at DAR will be undertaken to try to find the original affidavit (as of May 2024).

Other possible sources of Judith's name might be a Genealogy of the Bankston, Taylor, and Carter Families by Marcus Carter Rownd (1884-1948) supposedly held at the Southeastern Louisiana University Archives but they were unable to locate it. A Carter Family Bible which is in the possession of descendants of Elizabeth Carter, perhaps a Ruby Thompson (according to one Ancestry.com tree), might have information but it has not been located yet.

It is believed that Judith Bankston is the mother of all the known children of Nimrod Taylor. Judith might have been married in Anson County, North Carolina where her father was located at the approximate time of her marriage. (It's possible that was the part of Anson County which later became Montgomery County, NC.)

It is clear that Judith is a Bankston and daughter of Peter Bankston who died in Clarke County, GA. However, there is no source (yet) for her date and location of death other than the Texana Carter letter mentioned above (and Casey's Southern Taylor Families book which gave the date without a source). Her father died in 1803 and her husband Nimrod Taylor is named as a legatee. Did others assume she was dead if she was not named in the probate documents? Other daughters weren't named either, so that doesn't indicate she was deceased. Her death date, like her name, may have come from the affidavit of Texana Carter's great-aunt, mentioned above.

It is possible she died in 1803 in Wilkes County, GA as some claim (and as this profile used to state), however, by 1803 her husband and father are located in Clarke Co, GA where her father dies later that year. In fact, Judith's husband is taxed in Jackson Co, GA in 1800 - which becomes Clarke Co, GA in December 1801 - and then he is taxed in Clarke Co, GA in 1802 and 1803. Her father also made the move to Jackson/Clarke County at the same time. So Clarke County, GA is a more likely location of her death.

  • Careful using Southern Taylor Families 1607-1830 by Albert Eugene Casey, MD (1958) as some of the information he has on Judith Bankston and Nimrod Taylor's family (children) contains some errors he picked up from other genealogies/trees. For example, Richard Taylor in East Feliciana, LA does not appear to be their son (among several reasons, he alive but not named in a probate related document for Nimrod Taylor) and they are missing Peter Taylor (who is named in that probate document).
  • Careful using Bankston Cousins 1656-1996 book by Anne Martin Haigler (1998). Family History of the Bankstons from author's line including information supplied by others Bankston descendants with whom she was in correspondence. Please note that there are errors in this book and scant or unclear sources. For example, this book claims Judith Bankston as daughter of Jacob Bankston (believed to really be her uncle) despite also saying her husband Nimrod Taylor was legatee of Peter Bankston (believed to be her father). It also says she was a twin to John Bankston, son of Jacob and this is where the 11 June 1754 birthdate comes from (no source). This book appears to be the source of much that has been propagated on Ancestry.com, and undoubtedly other online sources, without original sources cited. I recommend the newest Bankston research, currently found here: https://sites.google.com/site/rambofamilytree/ which appears to have corrected some information in previously published books and which can incorporate additional changes as documentation is produced.
