Haplog R-BY56690 is the main branch for every Gresham male descendant of Edward Gresham Immigrant to Virginia in 1650. This haplog came into being about 1650 with a range before and after. To see the pathway from R-BY56690 back up to the main YDNA trunk that connects all the way back to R-M269 (which is a common haplog for Europeans migrating to the British Isles) just Google this haplog or any other haplog that you are interested in and you will see even the ancient migration patterns.
There is confusion with Haplog R-U198 being used for Gresham lines on genealogy websites but that is incorrect.
To be a biological Gresham male (regardless of your current surname) you must have a YDNA haplog that matches to the other Gresham men in the FTDNA Block Tree. Men who have tested and are in the Big Y 700 Gresham Surname Project all descend from the main branch of R-BY56690.
The main upper branch that connects R-BY56690 and R-U198 together with a common ancestor is Haplog R-U106. R-U106 was created about 3000 BCE. This means that R-U198 could not possibly be related to the US Gresham lines after 3000 BCE when they diverged from each other.
The Big Y 700 Gresham Surname Project at FTDNA also has a separate Phylogenic Tree compiled by Woody Hewitt that is available to members of the Big Y 700 Group. It gives a visual picture of how the descendant lines have formed that descend from Edward Gresham b. Abt 1630 d. Aft. 1690 in K&Q County, Virginia.
