Although only 11 years old, from 1851 Census data, Sarah was employed as a Woolen Cloth Birler [3]
Sarah was employed in what appears to be a family business. 1851 census data shows her father, William, was a clothier, and the whole family were involved in hand loom weaving, woolen cloth birling, and worsted spinning. In the1861 census, William and the three children still living in the household were all still listed as hand loom cloth weavers.
Census locations include Chapel Town Top, and Jumbles Well, Smalewell Road, Pudsey [1][2]
