Biography

Margaret Barnett was born 1847/1848, in Missouri, a daughter of William and Sarah Barnett. Margaret's father was born circa 1813, in Virginia (from census of 1850) and his mother was born circa 1816, in Kentucky, and had five children, born in Kentucky, prior to migrating to Pulaski county, Missouri. Margaret was the first of this family to be born in Missouri, and is found on the United States Census of 1850, as the "baby" of the family. ^[1]

It is not readily apparent what became of Margaret's parents. On the 1860 census, Margaret and her sister, Elizabeth are living in the household of their newly married older brother, John Barnett, in Benton Township, Crawford county, Missouri. ^[2]

It was in Crawford county, that Margaret met and married Charles Harmon Shoults, son of Jacob Israel Shoults and Pelagie (Valle) Shoults, of Crawford county, Missouri. The young married couple is found on the United States Census of 1870, living in Knobview Township, Crawford county, Missouri. They are both 21 years of age and childless at this point. ^[3] Together they had six children:

• Israel A. Shoults born 1870 near Grubville, Jefferson Co., MO.

• Nelson Joseph Shoults born December 15, 1872 near Grubville, Jefferson Co., MO and died March 20, 1956 in Cedar Grove Hospital, Hillsboro, Jefferson Co., MO

• Evangeline B. (Evie/Ava) Shoults born 1875 in Cherryville, Crawford Co., MO and died June 4, 1964 in Richwoods, Washington Co., MO.

• Minnie Minerva Shoults born 1878 in Cherryville, Crawford Co., MO; and died November 30, 1955 in DeSoto, Jefferson Co., MO

• John Richard Shoults born 7 August 1883 in Cherryville, Crawford Co., MO and died March 27, 1958 in his daughter, Ann Simpson's home on Partridge, St. Louis, MO.

• Infant Boy Shoults born July 28, 1889 and died 28 July 1889 in Cherry Valley, Crawford Co., MO.

Margaret died December 24, 1889 from complications of child birth and is buried in the Cherryville Cemetery, Crawford Co., MO. ^[4] Charles married secondly, Matilda Pruet in Leubbring, Franklin Co., MO. Children from his first marriage are found living with their father and their step-mother on the 1900 Census (See her spouse's profile)

Researcher's Notes

We get Margaret's maiden name from the Death Certificate of her son Nelson Joseph Shoults. A copy of this certificate is found on his profile.

There is an error between ancestry.com and Find A Grave. The confusion stems from the similarity of names:

1) Charles H Shultz married Mrs M(argaret) E Quail on 2 Jan, 1868 in Hinds County, Mississippi. Some researchers have erroneously linked this woman with 'our' Charles H Shoults who lived in Crawford County, Mo.

2) Charles H Shoults married Margaret Barnett in (perhaps) 1868 in (likely) Crawford County, Missouri.

Many attempts have been made to contact Mary Taylor the administrator of the Find A Grave memorial for correction.
