  • Fact: Also Known As Israell Barney
  • Fact: http://familysearch.org/v1/LifeSketch Israel has a birth record attached under Sources from Salem. It appears that he moved at some point to Rehoboth, and then from there to Newport.

According to the book, "Genealogy of the Barney family in America," he married 17 November 1696 at Rehoboth, Elizabeth Brackett(?) Barrett (?).

There are in Rehoboth vital records, birth records for sons: Josiah

  • Israel

Samuel These records area attached under sources.

This same source mentioned above also lists possible children Elizabeth, wife of William Clark, and Joseph. See pages 12 and 13.

It appears that Israel moved between about 1705 and 1711 from Rehoboth to Newport. Israel Barney of Newport deeded 80 acres in Rehoboth on March 27, 1711. Also, Israel Barney, Mariner, and wife Eliz. of Newport, sold to Joseph Barney of Rehoboth, March 27, 1712, land in Rehoboth westwardly of the Palmer River.

We don't know when Israel died, just that it was after March 27, 1712, when he deeded the land to Joseph.

There seems to be some confusion regarding Israel's wife Elizabeth's maiden name. The above-referenced book indicates that Elizabeth was the daughter of Josiah Brackett and Elizabeth Waldo, even though the original marriage record attached under Sources seems to say "Barrett." Of course, this wouldn't be the first time that someone's name was "misspelled" in a marriage record.

North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah; "Clarke Genealogy," p.275; Winifred L. Holman papers, p.2; Old Rehoboth Cemetery Records, East Providence, R.I.

GBFA says he md. Elizabeth BRACKETT, dau. of Josiah and Elizabeth (Wa ldo) Brackett; but that seems to be in error. The marriage record (at Reh oboth, Mass.) clearly shows her name as Elizabeth Barrett

GBFA p.12: Israel Barney witnessed the will of Samuel Park, dated Ju n 11, 1705; gives his residence as Rehoboth. Israel Barney of Newport deed ed 80 acres in Rehoboth on March 27, 1711 (Bk. 6, p.399). Deed recorded t o Israel Barney of Newport, 1712. Israel Barney, Mariner, and wife Eliz. of N ewport, sell to Joseph Barney of Rehoboth, March 27, 1712, land in Rehoboth w estwardly of the Palmer River. No death or administration found.

Israel and Elizabeth had three sons recorded in Rehoboth; probably ha d other children.

They removed to Rehoboth, Mass in 1704 and to Newport after 1719/1720. He was a Selectman in Rehoboth in 1719/1720.

The following Barneys joined the First Sabbatarian Church (7th Day Ba ptists), Newport, R.I.: Elizabeth Barney, July 25, 1708 Israel Barney, July 25, 1708 (July 21, 1708 shows an Israel Barne y on church roll of Hopkingon, R.I. 1st Sabbatarian Church). Constant Barney, Oct. 8, 1721 Joseph Barney, baptized June 17, 1721 Samuel Barney, Aug. 9, 1745 John Barney, son of Israel, b. July 11, 1735, Newport; "recorded " Dec. 9, 1734 (this is the son of Israel Jr.)

Davis papers sent by Lynda Schonover of St. Petersburg, Fla.: "Josia h and Israel Barney, son sof Jacob Jr., and brothers of Joseph who ma rried Constance Davis, had portions of their father Jacob's lands an d lived and raised families thereon. Upon them it is recorded that I srael, son of Jacob, married Wlizabeth Barrett, Nov. 18, 1696, and th eir son Josiah married Freelove, daughter of Elder Robert Wheaton , a sister of his cousin Daniel Barney Jr.'s wife Elsie. Their child ren were first and second cousins, the mothers being sisters and th e fathers cousins, and descendants of this marriage are yet -- 1899 - - living upon some of their paternal acres south of Torrey's Creek i n Rehoboth, of late mong them could be named Caleb, Wheaton, Otis, James, and their descendants."

Notes for Elizabeth Barrett:

The Vital Records of Rehoboth, Mass. CLEARLY SHOW that Israel Barne y married Elizabeth BARRETT. Mr. Preston was wrong in identifying her as Eliza beth Brackett, dau. of Josiah and Elizabeth (Waldo) Brackett. Thus, whil e her death and burial are correct, the birth information in the GBF A (and derived sources such as "Barneys of America") are not correct . Her gravestone at the old cemetery at Rumford says, "Elizabeth Bar ney, Ye wife of Mr. Israel Barney, Died April Ye 9th, 1743, in Ye 66t h Year of her age."

"Barney Record Book" 3, p 109 has birth as 16 Feb 1678, death as 12 A pr 1743.

Letter to EDP, Aug. 15, 1908, from Mrs. Lund R. Barney, Springfield , Mass.: "I cannot tell you anything further of wife Elizabeth of Isr ael (4) Barney. Probate records would perhaps solve the difficulty and prove Elizabet h's parentage."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Israel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Israel:
