Sydney James Barter was born about 1892 and his birth was registered in Fareham, Hampshire, England. ^[1]

In the 1901 Census, Sydney J Barter, aged 8 and born in Marshwood, Dorsetshire was in Whitchurch Canonicorum, Dorset, England in the home of his Uncle Sydney and Aunt Jane Whittle and his cousin Grace (aged 11) . ^[2] Also in the Whittle household was Jane's mother Anna Barter and Sydney's mother Charlotte Whittle.

At the age of 21 in 1914, Sidney was called into Military Service in the Royal Horse & Field Artillery at Beaminster, Dorset, England. He served in the 185th, 83rd, and 85th Battery. ^{[3] [4]}

In the 1911 Census, Sidney J Barter (Jane's nephew) who was born in Marshwood, Dorsetshire in 1893 was living with Jane and Sidney (a Dairy Manager) in Netherbury, Dorset, England and Jane was assisting in the Dairy. ^[5] He was working on the Farm as a Groom. Jane's unmarried sister Caroline Jane Barter (aged 68) was also visiting the family.

Research Notes

This Sydney birth record is probably not the son of Thomas John Ryall Barter as his Mother's maiden name was MILLER. Also there is a discrepancy in the birth location. In the 1901 Census, he is described as the nephew of Sidney and Jane Whittle so must be the child of one of Jane's siblings. NEEDS MORE RESEARCH.
