Biography

'The Bartolotti genus, as the name implies, is of Italian origin. About the middle of the 16th century Jean Baptista Bartolotti moved from Bologna to the Netherlands, where there was more freedom of faith, and settled in Antwerp. Here he married Maria de Boubais or Boubay. When the persecution intensified here too, they first moved to London, where in 1562 he became counsel for Em. van Meteren with whom he was also one of the foremen of the tolerant in the Dutch Reformed congregation, and then to Stade and Hamburg. Their marriage remained childless, and in order not to lose the name Bartolotti, in their will of October 26, 1577 they named the children of her sister Jenne or Jeanne de Boubais (or Boubay) and Christiaen van den Heuvel as heirs, on condition, that they took the name and coat of arms of the Bartolotti family. These children were three in number: Willem, Cornelia and Jan Baptist. [1]
