Biography

Elizabeth and her father Jacob are mentioned in the will of Bryan Boru O’Bannon.

The Virginia Magazine of History, Vol, 4, p 464: Supports that Elizabeth was the sister of Jacob O'Bannon Hite. It also shows Col., Tavener Beale had married a daughter of Jacob Hite by his first wife, and that they went to SC. Jacob’s will shows that Elizabeth was still alive at his death in 1776.

  • The Virginia Magazine of History, Vol, 4, p 464: states the following about the family;

“Before the Revolution, an Englishman named Pearis bought 10,000 acres of land from the Cherokees, embracing the present site of Greenville, S.C. He was very wealthy, had a beautiful home, and was very friendly with the Cherokees among whom he lived. Jacob Hite bought land of Pearis and moved to South Carolina in or about 1773; like Pearis he lived in the midst of the Cherokees and cultivated their friendship. His son, John OBanion Hite, a lawye, much beloved by the Indians, became engaged to a Miss Pearis. Came the Revolution and trouble with the Indians, John OBsrion Hite was killed by unfriendly Indians on the warpath while on a mission in an attempt to pacify them. Miss Pearis, learning of this, went to the Hite home to warn them. They did not pay much attention to her warning, and failed to leave home, being consequently taken by surprise by the Indians. Jacob Hite was killed, and his wife and daughters taken into captivity. The Hites who escaped massacre and capture returned to Virginia. After the war was over, in 1786, Col. Tavener Beale who had married a daughter of Hite by his first wife, went to South Caroline to ransom his mother and sisters from the Indians. Nothing more known from the Beale papers of the outcome. John Hits, son of Jacob and Catherine O’Bannon Hite, left his will in Berkeley Co., W. Va. 25 Oct. 1776; 18 March 1777, naming wife Sarah and son Jacob O'Bannon Hite, and sisters Mary and Elizabeth. In it he mentions his father's "death by violence" and claims a tract of land in South Carolina.”
