Biography

Edward Bealing was the son of Edward Bealing of Penryn and Ann his wife who were both Quakers. He was born around 1656. A birth record has not yet been found.

He was a merchant in Penryn, Cornwall.^[1]

Edward married Alice Trethowan. Surviving Quaker records describe him as of Penryn, Cornwall, and her as of Mabe, Cornwall. They agree that the marriage was on 9 April (Quaker 2nd month) but disagree on the year: Cornwall Quaker Quarterly Meeting gives it as 1674^[2] while, according to a record of West Cornwall Quaker Monthly Meeting, it was 1676.^[3][4] The Quarterly Meeting record is a copy with slightly less detail, and the Monthly Meeting record, which says they married at Budock, Cornwall, may be more accurate. They had the following children:

• Ann, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 15 December (Quaker 10th month) 1676^[5][6] and buried on 24 December 1676 (Quaker 10th month 1676)^[7][8]
• another Ann, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 27 October (Quaker 8th month) 1677^[9][10]
• Philippa, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 24 December (Quaker 10th month) 1679,^[11][12] died on 3 September (Quaker 7th month) 1692 and was buried the next day at Budock Quaker burial ground, Cornwall^[13]
• Edward, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 1 January 1681/2 (Quaker 11th month 1681/2),^[14][15] died on 21 June (Quaker 4th month) 1682 and was buried on 23 June^[16][17]
• Ales, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 7 May (Quaker 3rd month) 1683^[18][19]
• Elizabeth, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 7 June (Quaker 4th month) 1685^[20][21]
• Mary, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 3 September (Quaker 7th month) 1687^[22][23]
• Susanna, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 2 December (Quaker 10th month) 1691^[24][25]
• another Philippa, born at Penryn, Cornwall on 22 March 1695/6 (Quaker 1st month 1695/6)^[26][27]

Edward died in April (Quaker 2nd month) 1719. The Quaker death record does not give a day. It describes him as of Penryn, Cornwall, suggesting that he died there,^[28] and his 1719 probate record also says he was of Penryn.^[29] He was buried at Budock Quaker burial ground, Cornwall.^[30]

Edward is referred to as deceased in the 1755 will of his son-in-law George Fox, husband of his daughter Mary.^[31][32][33]
