returns.
He was the second son of John Richards and Patty Holbert Beall.
According to most records, he was born in Randolph Co., VA (present-day Tucker Co., WV), and around 1814-1818, the Beall family relocated near the mouth of Cedar Creek at the Little Kanawha River in Lewis Co. VA, present-day Gilmer Co., WV. However, one record refers to his birth there, at DeKalb (present-day Gilmer Co.).
As a young adult, John H. bought property a few miles north in an area of Lewis Co. that is now part of Ritchie Co.
He married Virginia Leah Hardman, daughter of Reverend James and Phoebe Cunningham Hardman, in 1840. John and Leah Beall lived and farmed in Ritchie County, first in the vicinity of Goffs, then Fonzo. They then moved to Leatherbark Creek, near the home of son Charles F., where they are buried.
Their children were James Sampson, Wilson Asbury, Dorcas Tamandsa, Henry, Thomas, Jasper Newton, Charles Fisher, Moses Tichnell, Abigail Columbia, Phoebe Leah, Emma, Meander Americus, and Florence L.
Dr. James Woofter, researcher, gives the date of death as Jan. 23, 1881. The Jan. 27 date is from the marker inscription as transcribed for a reading published by Ritchie Co. Historical Society.
