Biography

According to A History of Shenandoah County Virginia, by John W. Wayland, Ph.D., Jacob Bear or Bar lived in Rockbridge County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth Blosser and they had the following children, among others:

  • Elizabeth Bear, who married James Dunlap of Rockbridge;
  • Jacob Bear of Lexington, Virginia; and
  • Esther Bear, who married Rev. Daniel Hite. [1]

There is no mention there of the wife or children listed below, and this Jacob appears to have been confused with Jacob Bear of Rockingham County, Virginia.

On 22 Oct 1792 he and his wife Elizabeth (said to be of Rockbridge County, Virginia) and his siblings and their spouses - Peter Blauser and wife Magdalena and Isaac Roadcap and his wife Anna - sold his father Blasius' 314 acres to George Roadcap. [2]

According to a Research Note about him on the profile for his father Blasious Bear (abt.1718-abt.1791):

Jacob Bear, b. c 1744. md Elizabeth. He was living at Shenandoah County in 1782 with 8 white souls in his household. In 1783 at Shenandoah County with five white souls. He was taxed at Shenandoah County in 1787 next to Christian Bear and he paid for the tax of his son Jacob who was in his household. He was taxed at Rockingham County in 1788 with his sons Philip and Abraham and 7 horses. He was living at Rockbridge County in 1792 when he and his sisters sold his father's 314 acres in Shenandoah County.

Research Notes

The following text was in a previous, unsourced version of this biography. It appears to confuse this profiled Jacob with Jacob Bear, whose wife was Anna Barbara Miller. No evidence has been found that this profiled Jacob had a wife named Barbara Miller (or similar) or any of the children listed here:

Jacob was born in about 1739, the son of Biasiois and Esther Bear. He may have married first, Elizabeth Blosser. They had no children. He married second, Barbara Miller and they had children: Barbara (Lingle), Catherine (Valentine), Mary Ann (Harnsberger), Adam, Jacob, Barbara (Kisling), Barbara (Collgier), Unknown (Mallow), Henry, Elizabeth (Collgler) and Anna (Argenbright}. Jacob passed away in 1783.

Jacob Bear-45 was born in 1739 in Germany. Jacob-354 was born in 1724 in Pennsylvania. The Barbara Miller-1434, whose parents are unknown, and who married Jacob Bear-45, is not the same person as Anna Barbara Miller-13951, the daughter of Adam Mueller-4155 and Ann Barbara Koger-29, who married Jacob Bar-354. Barbara Miller-1434 was born in Butler County, PA 1739. Anna Barbara Miller-13951 was born in 1726 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Jacob Bar-354 and Anna Barbara Miller-13951 had a daughter Anna Baer-658 (b. 1741 in Rockingham, Virginia) who married Jacob Kisling-18, the son of Christoph Kissling-69 and Anna Christina Lingel-45. Jacob Kisling-18 was born 1760 in Augusta County, VA. Anna Baer-658 and Ann Barbara Bear-788 ae not the same person. Jacob Bear-45 and Barbara Miller-1434 had a daughter Anna Barbara Bear-788 (born in 1770 in Virginia) who married Jacob Kisling-71 (born 1766 in Rockingham City, VA.), the son of Christopher Kesling-20 and Christina Lingle-170. This Jacob KIsling-71 is not the same person as Jacob Kisling-18.
