Josiah, son of Philip H. Beck and Sarah Runkel,^[1] was born 21 September 1854 in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania.^[1] His parents had him baptized 3 January 1855 at Saint John's Lutheran Church in nearby Abbottstown, Adams County, Pennsylvania.^[1]

He was possibly a Union soldier during the Civil War.^[2]

In 1870 he appears to be a 16-year-old farmhand for Jonas Mummert in Hamilton Township, Adams County.^[3]
