Biography

James Beckwith was born at New London, Connecticut, on 1 June 1671, recorded as James Bequet, son of Mathew and Eliza.[1] He was baptized at New London on 10 September 1671, together with his brothers Mathew and John; they were recorded as the sons of Mathew Becket (or Beckett), Jr. [2][3] Their mother, Elizabeth Becket, was baptized and both of their parents were confirmed in the church on that same day.[2]

The family removed to Lyme, Connecticut, some time in the 1670s.

He was married on 18 February 1693 to Sarah Marvin, daughter of Reynold and Sarah (Clark) Marvin.[3][4]

James Beckwith removed to Southington, Connecticut in about 1744.[5] In Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Doherty states that he died in Southington in 1756; American Ancestry also gives this version of his death.[3] Mahlon G. Erickson states that James died in Farmington, Connecticut, on 22 December 1756. He notes that "E-mail from Nancy" dated 29 Mar 1996 indicates that James died in 1719.[6]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

In response to Daniel McGrath:

"The Beckwiths" by Paul Beckwith has been widely used as a source for Beckwith genealogy, but it has also been criticized as fraudulent (particularly for the aristocratic English ancestries he attached to various American Beckwiths) and is known to have may errors.

The more recent sources agree that James Beckwith married Sarah Marvin. One bit of circumstantial evidence for that is the fact that a child of James and Sarah was named Renald, which was the name of Sarah Marvin's father.

But was the wife of this James Beckwith Sarah Marvin (as stated here) or Sarah Griswold, as stated on page 77 of "The Beckwiths" by Paul Edmond Beckwith, 1891? And was it two children or nine?

e-Book is available on Google Books. See https://books.google.com/books?id=8JcxAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=beckwiths&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0CCAQ6AEwAGoVChMI3PrM6LGPxwIVRM6ACh3-JwSD#v=snippet&q=540&f=false

James Beckwith 540 born New London June 1st 1671 removed to Lyme in 1692 and died there in 1719 he married Sarah Griswold September 22d 1693 she was born at Lyme in 1673 and died there October 10th 1714 555 (Source then lists nine children by name and birth date).

This James Beckwith is my 6th ggf, so I'm quite interested.
