Biography

Hugh Bestone, esq, was the oldest son and heir of Sir George Bestone of Beston in the county of Chester, England, and his wife Alice, the daughter of Thomas Davenport of Henbury, esq.[1]

Hugh had siblings:

  1. Hugh, younger brother, who married Margaret the daughter of Lawrence Downes of Worthe and the widow of Philippe Worthe of Tydrington;[1]
  2. Jane who was married to Geffre Shakerley, esquire;[1] and
  3. Dorothie, who married John Coplestone of Edgesforde;[1]

After his mother's death, Hugh's father, Sir George, married one of the daughters of George Ireland of the Hutt in Lancashire, they had no children.[1] This second wife also died before Sir George and he married a third time, to Mary, the daughter of James Chittwod of Walcherton, they had no children.[1]

Hugh married Thomasyne, the daughter of John Copleston of Edgeford in county Devon.[2]

Hugh and Thomasyne had children:

  1. George, who died without issue;[2] and
  2. John, who died without issue;[2]

Hugh married a second wife, Margaret, the daughter of Thomas Ireland of the Hutt, in the County of Lancaster, esq, but they had no children.[2]

Hugh then married a third wife, Margaret, the daughter of James Cheetwood of Wacharton, in the county of Chester, gent, and they also had no children.[2]

Hugh Beeston of Beeston in the county of Chester, esq, died on the 3 May, 1608, and was interred in Bunbury Church, co Chester.[2] His brother Hugh survived him and signed the Funeral Certificate.[2]

Research Notes

Hugh Beeston (Biston) received a BA from Oxford on 18 Jun 1563. It is possible that he went on to study law: the name Beeston comes up as a "student of Lincoln's Inn 1565, from Cheshire."[3]

This profile needs serious fixing of dates. Everything is off by about 20 years. Hugh's father George was born 1520. The elder brother of Thomasine, Hugh's first wife, was "30 and upwards" at the time of his fathers i.p.m. If we say that means 39 years old, then he could not have been born before about 1546. His sister was born after that. Therefore she did not marry in 1550. In fact, 1550 is a pretty good estimate for her birth year. She could have married in say 1574 and Hugh (whose age is not given in his father's I.p.m.) could have been born about 1543. This would square with the known dates.

One other thing, those funeral certificates that Rylands published are not a very good source. Rylands himself is very reliable, but he is just publishing "raw data" here, probably at the hand of the first or second Randle Holme. Ormerod or Earwaker would be much better to use.
