Biography

• From the "Genealogical notes of the Washburn family":

Martha (or Patty) Benjamin was born at Livermore, Oct. 4, 1792. She was the daughter of Lieut. Samuel and Tabitha Livermore Benjamin.^[1]

On 7 Mar 1812, Israel Washburn and Patty Benjamin, both of Livermore, Maine (then in Massachusetts), published at Livermore their intention to marry.^[2] They married at Livermore on 26 Mar 1812.^[3]

Martha Benjamin was one of Nature's Noblewomen.

After her death Mrs. J. H. Hanson, in the " Star and Covenant of Chicago, said of her : " Mrs. Washburn's life was one of great purity and excellence; her character was one of marked womanly force, impressing itself by a quiet yet irresistible influence on all who knew her. A genuine Christian wife and mother, reverenced wherever known. Her house was ever the minister's home."

Rev. George Bates, once her pastor at Livermore, said : "As a wife and mother, Mrs. Washburn had few superiors in our land. Upon her children she has left the impress of her character and they will rise up and call her blessed."

Her portrait, painted by her grandson, Cadwallader L. Washburn, has recently been hung in the Orphans' Home in Minneapolis, Minn., dedicated to her memory.
