Housewife, Mother and Widow, of Croydon Road, Glen Eden, Auckland; formerly of Maungaturoto, Northland, and of Tairua, Whitianga, Coromandel; originally of Tauranga, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand.
Lucy Bennett was the 3rd surviving daughter of Henry Riley Bennett Sr and Matira (Matilda) Te Pokiha, of Tauranga, Bay of Plenty. She was born on 6 September 1862 at Tauranga.
She was baptised on 5 October 1862 in the Parish Church of Tauranga, Diocese of Waipu, by Officiating Clergyman, Rev Charles Baker. Her baptismal given name was Ruhi (Maori for Lucy). Her Sponsors were: Hapita Irikau, Rahapa Irikau, and Ihipera Hakopa.
Her birth was registered by her father, "Henry Bennett, Carpenter, Tauranga" on 27 October 1862, by Henry Tacy Clarke (1825-1902), Deputy-Registrar of Births and Deaths in the District of Tauranga.[1]
On 5 February 1879 at the Market Hotel, Auckland, by the Rev D Dutton, Lucy Bennett, of Tairua (aged 16), married 1ly James Gamble, also of Tairua (aged 25), the only surviving son of Thomas Gamble and Susan Fogerty McDowell, the widow of Thomas McDowell.[2]
On their Application for License to Marry in the Auckland District, dated 4 February 1879, the Parties were: James Gamble, Carpenter, bachelor, aged 25, dwelling in Auckland (length of residence, 3 days), and Lucy Bennett, spinster, aged 17 [actually 16], dwelling in Auckland (length of residence, 3 days); name and relation of Person giving Consent in case of Minor: Henry Riley Bennett, father; their marriage to be solemnised in the Market Hotel, Auckland, by Officiating Minister, Rev D Dutton; Archives Reference, BDM 20/24, No 44, p81 (New Zealand Archives, Wellington).
They had issue ten children, of whom five died in infancy or childhood.
Four daughters and one son survived to adulthood:
1 Susanna (Susan, Susie) Gamble (1879-1918). She married George William White, of Whitianga, with issue five children. She died in the 1918 influenza pandemic, aged 39.
2 (James) Henry Gamble (1883-1954), of Taupo. He married Melba Scheland, with issue nine children.
3 Edith May Gamble (1891-1950). She married William Charles Whittaker, of Auckland, with issue 11 children.
4 Beatrice Gamble (1893-1938). She married Charles Edward Donnelly, uncle of Martin Paterson Donnelly, New Zealand Test Cricketer. They had issue one daughter who died in infancy.
5 (Vera) Doretta (Dorrey) Gamble (1897-1975). She married George Idan Sparrey MBE, with issue eight children.
In circa 1901 Lucy became the mistress of George Patterson Moore, whom she later married after the death of her first husband. They had issue two daughters, born in 1902 and 1903. Both daughters births were registered under the name Gamble.
Her first husband, James Gamble, died on 10 September 1912 at Whitianga.
On 3 January 1913 at the Office of the Registrar of Marriages, Auckland, by T Culpan (Registrar), Lucy Gamble (aged 50), Widow, married 2ly George Patterson Moore (aged 49), Labourer and Bachelor. Witnesses: E Livermore, Clerk, and N Pirihi, Cadet. He was the only son and child of Adelaide Elizabeth Stillwell and George Daniel Moore, of Hobart, Tasmania. He died 18 months after their marriage, on 29 June 1914, of cancer of the face. They had issue two daughters:
6 (Dorothea) Adelaide Gamble Moore (1902-1919). She died of Tuberculosis, aged 17.
7 Doris Coral (Dot) Gamble Moore (1903-1964). She married 1ly Ian Forbes Williams, with issue. She married 2ly Frank Davis Clarke; they went to live in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
Her eldest daughter, Susie Gamble White, died of influenza in 1918, aged 39.
Her 5th surviving daughter, Adelaide Moore, died of Tuberculosis in 1919, aged 17.
On 3 January 1913, the date of her second marriage, the couple resided at Mungaturoto, Northland.
When her second husband died, on 29 June 1914, their residence was at the corner of Cook and Nelson Streets, Auckland.
The 1914 Electoral Roll for Auckland Central shows Lucy Moore, widow, residing c/o Mrs Clarke, Foley Ave, off Hobson Street. This Mrs Clarke was not her daughter, Doris, who later married Frank Davis Clarke.
At her death in 1930 her residence was at Croydon Road, Glen Eden, Auckland.
She died on Wednesday 20 August 1930 at her residence, Croydon Road, Glen Eden, Auckland, aged 67, of "Auricular Fibrillation Cerebral Embolism Hemiplegia" (Embolic stroke). The Certifying health practitioner was I F Lamb (who last saw her alive on 17 August 1930).
On Friday 22 August 1930 a Funeral Service was held at the Anglican Church, New Lynn, prior to her burial (with her second husband) in Purewa Cemetery, Meadowbank, Auckland.[3]
The record of her birth registration on the NZBDM website has been incorrectly transcribed, stating her Family Surname was Pokiha. According to the NZBDM Index: the Surname Pokiha was correctly named as Surname of Mother in the Register-Book of Births for Tauranga District, Quarter ending 31 Dec 1862.
