Biography

Charles Bennett was born in 1825 or 1826 in Almondsbury, Gloucestershire, to Charles and Hannah (Shipp) Bennett. In 1850 he married Harriet Tomkins in Bristol. In 1851 they were in Henbury, Gloucestershire, with daughter Fanny, age 0. In 1861 they were in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire, he a laborer, but in later censuses again in Henbury, where their eight children were born, 1851-1869. All eight are listed with their parents in 1871. In 1871 he is a baker but in 1881 he was farming 50 acres.

1871 census says born in "Potering, Gloucestershire", but "Potering" is crossed out, and Almondsbury written in place. The 1861 census has the family living in Westbury on Trym, Gloucestershire. 1881 census has William and Herbert as the only children at home.

The marriage registration to Harriet Tompkins shows Charles Bennett's father as also named Charles, and Charles (junior) as 'Widowed'; so far, I haven't been able to find a wife that preceded Harriet Tompkins.
